Are games from the Wii playable on the Wii? On another thread the OP said they had plenty of games to use so they wouldn't need to buy a bunch of new ones. But my MIL just bought a Wii for her house and thinks her old games won't work.

Yes...the wiiU is capable of playing old Wii games. You can also use the old remotes too. The new game pad won't work with older game.

Actually, with the latest firmware updates, the game pad can be used as a TV for the older games.

I even believe there's an IR sensor that can detect the remote if you point it to it. But it's better for games that simply require the use of the buttons or just motion of the wiimote and nunchuck instead of pointing.

Note that you can only have one game pad per system - so no extra game pad for lil sis...

All this said, it's not selling well. The Mario franchise is the only good things, but for example EA Sports dropped out - no more Madden or Fifa. The company that licenses MLB also is not doing Wii U.

Some games are still good and play nice - Lego franchise for example.

Thanks for the information! :cool2:

MIL went to the store with a couple of her grandsons who talked her into replacing the old Wii (broken) with the U since they don't have a Wii or U at their house. Wish she would have let me research it a bit before just going for it.

But at least now I can stop her from dumping all the old games:thumbsup2

Yeah, we struggled a bit with deciding to replace the Wii with Wii U. The alternative was to start all over with PS4 or Xbox One for $500 (with no games to start). We decided to get the Wii U so at least the numerous games we already had would not go to waste.

If the Mario franchise is important, then I'd stick with it.

Note that they are selling used Wii for almost nothing.

Finally, the new consoles are just for the hardcore gamers at this time. I would instead get a 360. WM had them for $100 during BF...

The old games are not just Mario. I would imagine with Xbox One and PS4 out now, the 360 and PS3 will stop being supported soon, so I hate to invest in a system and then have to buy games, when it is already been replaced.
