Hi everyone,

A friend of mine has been raving about the DIS boards forever and when I was telling her that we were considering buying a Wii for the kids for Christmas she suggested that I come here with my questions. So here goes...

There seem to be different controllers for different games. How do I know which ones I will need? Are there some controllers that are more popular than others? Should I buy one for each person or can you share them?

There seem to be several bundle options, is there something I should look for in a bundle? Anything that I don't want to be without, for example I have seen a few different motion bars in these bundles. Is one better than the other?

Any advice you can give me would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

The system comes with two controllers, one is the regular controller and one is a special type of controller (nunchuck) that is used along with the first for some games. Unless the child (or adult) will be playing alone, you will need another of each (or at least the standard type controller) of the controllers. Additionally, there is a balance board (sold for Wii Fit) that is used not only for the aerobic type games but also for some of the sports type games (snowboarding, etc.). For some games you can also use additional controller accessories, but those are just that accessories (such as a sterring wheel for Mario Cart) and the regular controller fits into them but it doesn't require them to play the game, it only makes it feel more real.

That is my knowledge on the controllers for Wii based on what we own, but there may be others out there that I am unaware of at this time. Good luck!

Yes, there are different controllers for different games, however, most games use the Wii remote controller (the stick looking thing). Other games use the Nunchuck connected to the Wii remote controller. IMO, your best bet is to buy a bundle... How many kids do you have? We have to girls so I bought them a bundle last year that came with 2 Wii controllers and 2 nunchucks... However, if their friends come over, they are still able to play by simply trading off. Even if you only bought them 1 controller each, they could still play by trading off. The only problem with this would be if they wanted to play each other, which is why you would need 2. Most of the games only allow you to play with 1-2 people at a time, so you'll never need nore than 2 controllers. For instance, the bowling game allows several players but they each have a turn one at a time.

Other games will come with the devices you need to play the game with. We bought them a karaoke game that came with a mic and Dance Dance Revolution that came with 2 dance mats. If you are unsure about what you will need to play the game, the back of the boxes will tell you what is needed.

Hope this helps!!!:thumbsup2

I thought some images may help (not meaning to be insulting, I just wasn't sure how familiar you are with the system!) :
wiiremote.jpg

This is the Wii remote, one of these is included in the regular system package. The remote is used for nearly all the games. I would say all, but I don't know all the games, and I've never heard of one that didn't use it at least somehow, but to be on the safe side I'll say nearly all games use the remote.

wii_nunchuk.jpg

This is the nunchuk, one of these is included in the regular system package. Some games use this, some do not. For example, in the game Wii Sports (which is included in the regular system package), there are certain sports like boxing that require both a remote and a nunchuk, and certain sports that just need the remote, like bowling. A nunchuk is attached to the bottom of the remote, so there is not a way to use a nunchuk on its own. For most games, a nunchuk simply makes it easier to move around, since it has a joystick like most video game controllers.

wii-motionplus.jpg

This is Wii MotionPlus. It's what you see being attached in the image on the right, and attached in the image on the left. This was developed by Nintendo to increase the sensitivity of the Wii remote to things such as force and subtle wrist movements. It was included in the game Wii Sports Resort (available with 1 MotionPlus included, or also with 2 MotionPlus included) or it is also available separately. THIS ACCESSORY IS NOT REQUIRED UNLESS IT IS SPECIFICALLY LISTED ON THE BOX! Currently only a few games require this accessory, one of them being Wii Sports Resort. The other games that require it are all sports games. However, this addition has proved to be very well reviewed and more games being planned in the future absolutely WILL require this additional accessory. The nunchuk is able to be attached to the bottom of the MotionPlus the same way it is attached to the remote.

wiiClassicController.jpg

This is the Wii Classic Controller. Like the nunchuk, this controller is plugged into the bottom of the Wii remote, and this is how it receives its power. This Classic Controller is NOT required for ANY games currently available in stores. It was developed so that people could easily play the classic video games available for purchase on the Virtual Console. Unless you are intending to purchase games from the Virtual Console, there is no reason to own this Classic Controller.

wii-fit-board.jpg

This is the Wii Balance Board. It comes bundled with either Wii Fit or the newly released Wii Fit Plus. It is also a control option on some other games, such as skiing, snowboarding, and cheerleading. If it is an option for a game, it will be listed on the back of the game package.

mario-kart-wii-20080218092605334-000.jpg

This is the Wii Steering Wheel. It's just a simple plastic shell shaped like a steering wheel that has a place for you to snap in the Wii remote. One of these wheels can come bundled with the game Mario Kart Wii. Wheels are available separately. There are also different styles and colors of wheels that have been released by other video game accessory companies besides Nintendo. The steering wheel makes driving games like Mario Kart Wii easier to play (in my own opinion) but it is not in any way required by a game. It's just a nice visual aid and makes the experience a little more immersive.

There are several other accessories that work similar to the Wii Steering Wheel in that they're a shell which you snap a remote into. There are some that are guns, there are some that are fishing rods, there are some that are light sabers, there are some that are tennis rackets, there are some that are pom poms! Anything that is like this (a shell) is never required by a game, they're just fun to have around to make the experience that much more realistic.

Anything that is necessary to play a game will be listed on the back of a package with symbols. These same symbols will tell you how many people can be playing the game.

As far as number of remotes, I can't see many people needing more than 2 remotes (and 2 nunchuks, and 2 MotionPlus). Most games that are multiplayer do not have 4 people playing simultaneously. Anyone who knows differently please comment, because the only games I have that even offer 4 player are Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. Most games will have people take turns and you can just pass the remote from one player to the next. As far as what bundles to look for, and what should be included, I'd say the best bundles include an extra controller set (remote + nunchuk, or even remote+nunchuk+MotionPlus) because those accessories get pricey when just purchasing them singly without being bundled into a game. Best advice I can give about games that are included in Wii bundles is that reviews are your friend. Video game reviews are numerous and easy to find online (or ask people on here or other forums). Look up a game and see what people are saying about it and then decide if you think it's something your family will enjoy.

This is an incredibly long post and I hope it was useful to you, if you have any further questions, feel free to ask (I'm a bit of a Wii/Nintendo/Video Game junkie in that I do lots of research to determine what is the best and most cost-effective way to purchase).

Excellent post, CheshireSmile!

I know that Mariokart and the Raving Rabbids games allow up to 4 players to play at the same time. I think there are a few others, as well, but I can't remember them right now. We have 4 remotes and 4 nunchucks, though, and have used them all at the same time fairly often.

OP, you might also want to check out the Wii FAQ thread on the budget board. It has lots of information as well as game reviews.

Thank You!!! All of your posts were very helpful.

CheshireSmile- Thank you for taking the time to post all of the info with the pictures, I am very visual so the pictures are a huge help for me.

I feel like I can make a more informed decision!
Thanks again!

There's a loooong Wii thread over on the Budget Board where people have posted reviews of games. It's very helpful if you're undecided about what games to start with. :thumbsup2

:thumbsup2 Cheshiresmile

We are currently deciding if we want Santa to bring our family one for Christmas.
Thanks for the info and pics.

CheshireSmile,

We have 4 kids and were thinking to purchase 3 extra remotes and nunchuks for our Christmas Wii. Thanks so much for the clear post with pictures! We may still get the extras because from what I have read and heard, Mariokart is lots of fun for our aged kids.:thumbsup2

Try renting games before you buy. I do this and most of the games were fun to play but not enough that I would want to own them

You don't need much to own a Wii! All you basically have to do is by the set and maybe the starter pack. If you really want to play some more advanced games you HAVE to buy special controllers but most of them are not worth it. If you have more then one person in your family and you guys want to play together you will want one nunchuck (which is the remote with the Pac-mac resemblant moving stick) and one regualar remote for each person in your family! I recommend family games like, Wii Sports, Wii Play, 30 great family games, Toyy Story Mania, and basically anything with the word Wii in front of it.

Have fun!:):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)

We have MarioKart and with the wheel and honestly, I prefer playing it with just the remote. So if you want to save some money, don't buy the wheel for all to play Mario Kart with. Try it first and see how the family members feel about the wheel. All games can be played with just the main remote (some need the nunchuck, too). The rest are just add-ons.

I'm not the OP, but thank you all for the info. I posted a similar question on the budget board and got some great info, but I need all the help I can get on this wii stuff.

Does anyone know about the wii fit plus? How is it different from the wii fit?

Thanks

Hi everyone, I'm so glad my post is helping! I know my mom gets a very 'deer in the headlights' look if I tell her I want a video game for Christmas! I can't blame her, there is SO MUCH STUFF out there!!! I saw this question and thought I'd pop back into the thread, Wii Fit Plus is the same game as Wii Fit, with additional activities and balance games. All of the activities and games there were in original Wii Fit are ALSO on the Wii Fit Plus disc. So if you don't own Wii Fit yet and would like to, get the new Wii Fit plus, because there's no need to own both. If you already have Wii Fit, you can buy just the Wii Fit Plus disc if you're interested in the new activities and balance games.
