Wig ?

Has anyone worn a wig to WDW before? My hair has fallen out due to a treatment i am undergoing and I now wear a wig most days. Has anyone ever worn one to WDW before and how did it hold up. Will it fall off on rides or anything?

my dd9 has had alopecia since 2.5. We have some experience with wigs from when her hairloss was at its worst. Wigs can be very hot which isn't a great mix with Florida. One product that may be worth checking out is www.hatswithhair.com. If you don't already use some they make wig tape and adhesive which may give you more security.

Thank you for asking my question. I was just thinking about that. I have a wig that is breathable and "life like" it is not heavy and has a scalp to allow air to the hair and scalp underneath. I was just envisioning me riding RNC and seeing my wig fall first , I was also wondering if it would hold up on TOT . I can see me now with my no hair after riding that, But what would be even funnier is coming off the rides with no hair and everyone looking at me .. I will look into the hats with hair thing and see what I can find, I think I might just chance it!

I can imagine what it looks like to have your hair suddenly come off. I remember when dd was 5 and got her first wig. We just came from picking it up in Boston. . We took the subway and stopped at Fanieul Hall. We were in the middle of a fairly crowded area and dd decided she was tired of the wig already She just pulled it off and many people looked surprised.

If you can find a heavy/tight headband that might also help the wig to stay on. For the wind we found a bandana helped a bit more.

I am so uncomfortable not wearing my wig out in public and I hope I can wear it at WDW. I am just terrified it will come flying off while i am on big Thunder!

I wear a wig at WDW, but I am unable to go on any of the "fast" or "bumpy" rides. Maybe you could try standing in front of a fan, jumping and shaking your head vigorously (yes, I'm serious) to see if you can lose it that way.

You could check with a wig store and ask them what they recommend you do--maybe they have something that would help.

I saw this website - Head Covers - on a thread on the Family Board where someone was looking for a swim cap to protect her hair.
It looked like they have some very nice products for people with alopecia or hair loss from cancer. They have some grip bands that might help keep wigs in place and adhesive and tape.

They also have some cute wigs with stretch hairbands attached and beautiful hats, caps, turbans and headscarves.

PS - I am going to move this thread from the disABILITIES Community Board to the disABILITIES Board because it is pertinent to WDW trips.

It's not a question that has come up before, but I'm sure the discussion will be helpful to many people, who maybe do not feel comfortable or didn't think to ask it.

Also, something I just remembered - if you are wearing a hat, the Preshow presentation mentions hats must be removed and placed in the underseat net.

My aunt wears a wig from hairloss due to illness, but when we are on vacation she takes a vacation from the wig too! She has several little baseball caps that she wears and she is much more comfortable wearing them! She doesn't ride many fast rides, so she really doesn't take the hat off much. Just on Dinosaur at AK - she waits til the car rounds to the teleportation thing and that's when she whips the hat off for the ride!

I went to WDW (specifically AK) 2 years ago in the middle of my chemo treatments. I chose not to wear my wig in the park. 1, because it was too hot, and 2, I was afraid it would fall off during Expedition Everest. I wore a soft scarf head cover and a hat and was fine. I did, however, find my self holding my head the entire time on Expedition Everest. You need to do what is comfortable for you.

Some fyi if you want to try and have a wig covered by insurance. I had one synthetic wig covered by insurance for dd then a year later I had a hatswithhair covered by insurance so it doesn't have to be a traditional wig. The most important thing is to see what your insurance allows.

1.Usually you need a prescription from a doctor that states medical hair prothesis (don't say wig).

2.Typically you pay for the hairpiece then submit for reimbursement.

3.The receipt for the hairpiece also needs to say hair prothesis but most companies will write that if you ask them.

4.Each insurance company has their own reinbursement forms that may be easy to find on their website or you might have to call customer service.

Every insurance is different and each state has its own rules. I know in MA if a hair prothesis is covered for cancer it has to also be covered for other medical hairloss reasons such as alopecia, trachollitosis, burns etc. It is usually based on a maximum amount of money per year.
