Have they finished upgrading so there is free WiFi at the campsites yet? Anyone there now who can confirm?

Are you saying they now have Free Broadband internet thru cable or just tv. Do you get a Free modem.

Right.

Any site (campsites and cabins) has free cable internet connections now (which formerly cost $9.95 per day). The use of the cable modem is free but does require a refundable $150 deposit.

The wifi issue is hampered by the radio frequency issue because the busses running through the park are connected to a central control wirelessly on radio frequencies that are close to the operating frequencies for the wifi. It's that ol' interference thing. :mic:

This is as I reported in my March trip report. I wonder if they'll ever get the radio frequency issue sorted out.

When did internet access at the campsites become free? The last time I was there (2010) they were still charging for it.

WDWFWFan,

It was about the January 2012 timeframe. All the other resorts on property were getting the free wifi installed and the Fort was down the list toward the end. Then they encountered the RF problem (the other resorts don't have the busses driving through the middle of them). So to keep the service on par with the other resorts, they quit the daily fee so it's not wireless but it is free.

You still have true wireless wifi hotspots at the Meadows Trading Post, the Outpost (checkin) area, and the Settlement area (Trails End). The service is slow (about 3g speeds) but it works.

They probably still need the deposit for the modem based on a replacement cost scenario. That being said, I try to disconnect from technology as much as possible while on vacation.

It is what it is right now.

Anyone know what type of modem they give you? I have an old Comcast modem I wonder if I can use it.

Thanks! I knew that it must have been a recent decision.

Sounds like a silly question, but could we get the free cable modem and then attach a wireless router to it to have our own wifi access point at our campsite?

Yes, I know people that did that.

Does anybody know if you have to use their modem, or can you bring your own? We switched to Verizon Fios at home, so we have a cable modem we aren't using. If it work would, seems like it would be simpler to use our own modem than mess with the deposits and all for theirs. We have our old router too, somebody already said that should work.

At the front desk they give you a nice little kit containing all the coax and other cables you will need and you return it at checkout. All I did was follow their diagram and plug in my computer and it worked. Super easy.

Wow! I did not know you could do that! So it is possible to get the modem and take your own wifi router for multiple laptops to be used? :)

Yes, you can use your own WiFi router and used several devices.

We've done it many times!

Well, we're back from our 10 day trip, and as was previously stated, no wi-fi at the campsites. We didn't t check the public places, as this was mostly for my autistic son who likes to wirelessly stream video on his iPod touch from our Netflix account while he's hangout in his bunk, playing with his Kinex.

We had a good trip overall otherwise, and maybe by the next time we return they'll have sorted out the wi-fi problems.
