Wife injured while on a WDW motor-coach

Several years ago I had an incident with a lift bus when staying at AK Lodge. The driver had lowered the lift and I didn't notice that it wasn't firmly on the sidewalk- about 1/2 inch wasn't. When he raised the lift with me on it it ended up sending me UNDER the bus and I cracked a knee-cap. I was stuck with my knees jammed for quite some time with guests on the bus complaining that they were going to miss their ADR's. The driver left the bus running, so I also had to breathe those fumes. Yeah...not a "magical moment".---Kathy
I remember that weekend. It was the same weekend that a transportation castmember decided to push on the back of my chair seat to get it up the ramp onto the bus. I had already told him the ramp was too steep and I would wait for the next bus and he told me there would not be another bus so I had to take that one. Injured my back because of him and was not a happy camper. Wiser now, and will request and even demand a supervisor rather than go up a ramp I feel is too steep.

I can tell you we witnessed a horrific motorcycle accident last March--some lady ran a red light and knocked a CM over two cars--he is lucky to be alive!! WDW security showed up, but after 2 hours regular police never did. He was long gone, we left, WDW security took our information where we were staying. We never heard from anyone again.

I can tell you someone helped me track the young man down. He is alive, had multiple breaks, and he told me the police finally came to see him in the hospital on day 5!!!:scared1:

Please don't give up on WDW, Cathy and I haven't. I'm so sorry for what has happened to your daughter, and unhappy for what happened to my wife. Hopefully these incidents will never happen again to our families, and I pray not to anyone else.

You say she is your youngest daughter, so I would venture to say you have other children? I'm sure your husband would never knowingly put the children at risk and it sounds like dad wants to take them back, perhaps to make this trip even better than the last one was planned to be.:goodvibes

If I were you, I would agree to go with the caveat that your husband make the necessary and timley calls to the resort several weeks, then several days, then the night before you leave, to make sure the room is properly prepared for your daughters arrival.

Best of luck and hopefully, best of times when next you and yours are again at WDW.

Thanks Bear. We have made reservations off site since their dad wants to take them and I will be with them as well. Maybe one day I will trust WDW resorts again but for now, I am just really worried.

Have you thought about getting a air filter to put in her room while you are down in FL? Just to reduce some of the airborn allergens so she can sleep better. We have them in our RV but I have also brought them with when flying. The airlines did not charge me to bring it with cause they veiw it as medical equipment.

Kathy,

Greetings and allow me to first say I'm married to a Cathy, with a "C". We have fun with that as we go, the sisterhood of the C/Kathys as she calls it.

Sorry to hear that you were injured and had to spend time under an idling bus, but, if it's any consolation what happened to you, your episode was not without a gain to transportation safety at WDW.

I took note several times while we were waiting to load my wife's scooter, that if a driver, once the ramp was fully extended, did not like the look of the way the ramp was sitting. They would ask us to please wait, then they would walk out onto it all the way to the end. They would do a little "knee-bending hop" to make sure the ramp was in solid contact with the ground. If it was, we were given the high sign to board. One time the driver did not like the feel of it, so he advised us to stay back as he was going to re-position the bus. After doing so, and checking the ramp again, he felt it was safe to use and we boarded the bus without a hitch.

As for those people who were complaining that they were going to miss their ADR's. While part of me feels for them, there is a part of me that says "tuff tuckus!" ADRs are held for 20 minuets past the reserved time, that and I'm sure if a WDW representative contacted the respective dining locations advising them of what happened, I'm more that sure these guests would be accommodated.

Breathe enough of those exhaust fumes and you'll have a "magical moment" alright... "That's not Tink!!! Don't go towards the light!!" :tinker:

On another note. If I may ask, is your service dog a Seeing Eye Dog? My wife and I were puppy raisers and raised several dogs for Guiding Eyes for the Blind out of Yorktown Heights, NY https://www.guidingeyes.org

Sorry I'm getting back to you so late. Skye is a mobility assistance dog. In fact she just finished her re-certification exam today which is given every 18 months to be sure she is still doing all her tasks accurately and quickly. Thanks for being puppy raisers! I think this would be so hard having to give up a dog you're attached to ( and who loves you!) even knowing that it's for a good cause.---Kathy

Congratulations princess Skye on passing your re-certification exam today.:thumbsup2:woohoo:

Winniedapooh,

Wow, sounds like quite the thing to witness, he's lucky you stayed around to offer what you saw as a witness, and for your determination in following up on his condition.
Blessings to you! :thanks:

:hug:Bear and Bearswife

I am sure you did everything the way your wife wanted you to do things, you know her better than anyone.
I'm the boss in my house...and I have my wife's permission to say so! :worship:

As a parent I would not want to cut short my kids fun at WDW.:hug:Sorry all of this made it harder to enjoy the fun.

Thankfully Cathy did not get anything broken, and as stated, the use of medication made the pain manageable. In the end, it's all about what's best for the family, so she put on a good face for the kids and allowed them to have their first time there as a family be all it could be.

Keep us updated on how wife is healing.

Will do in a later post.

Hope your stress level is going down:hug:

Thanks for your concern. My stress level is down, and my life as I know it is back to normal... For whatever that's worth! :rotfl2:

I am not a big fan of lawsuits. That being said, there are legitimate ones as well. This man's wife was injured when a driver improperly used the lift. That is negligence. It's not like she wasn't looking where she was going and drove into a tree with her scooter. I don't recall reading anywhere he was looking for money. I think he was venting he was surprised LO was not called as well as looking to see where he could get the reports. I think others have made some great points of how LO is handled differently at WDW. It would be like some tripping over something in a bus up here. The police would likely not come for something like that but EMS would arrive.

Ccgirl,
You are correct in your reply to that person. My post(s) were aimed as discussing and finding out why no LEOs were summoned to the scene. I received some very nice and informative replies, to which I thank all who responded to and in this thread. :thumbsup2

In any case OP, I am glad to hear your wife is doing better and you are considering another trip.

Thanks for your kind words. Cathy is feeling much better now. "Considering another trip" cgirl(?!), as we were sitting on Disney's Magical Express waiting to be taken back to the airport, we were already talking/planing/dreaming about our next trip to WDW!! :chat:

Sounds like Skye is quite the gal! You two seem luck to have one another, I know a fellow who has a mobility assistance dog as he's in a wheelchair, the things that pup can do is amazing!

I must admit, it's never easy. Our first boy Wyeth, was the hardest. I'll never forget, we were at the kennel, crying (mixed tears of joy and sadness) and holding onto him, and our regional coordinator knew what to do. She leaned in, put a soft hand on Cathy's shoulder and said "I know it's hard to let go. You think he still needs you, you did all you can do, and Labs love whomever feeds them..." It was just enough to break the ice of letting go for real. Wyeth went on to become a grade A, Number 1 Guide Dog and the next time we cried (tears of happiness and pride) for him, it was at Wyeth's and his new recipients graduation from the center.

Our last girl Helena, was not only accepted into the program, she was such an outstanding girl in both breed-type and personality, she was accepted into the breeding program. She just gave birth to her first litter of pups on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. A few days after we got back from WDW. The pups are now big enough, and Cathy is now well enough that this Monday, March 28th, Cathy and I are going to visit our girl Helena and our Grandpuppies.

We understand that these dogs have a purpose and destiny in life. Our job, is to help them get to where they need to be. We love every moment of it! :goodvibes

Go with your mothers instincts. If staying off-site, while allowing the family to enjoy time together at WDW is what works for now. Then ~that's~ what works for now. :thumbsup2

I do hope all of you have the best kind of wonderful, magical and family time possible while your all there. :grouphug:
