Widescreen or Full screen?

Widescreen all the way!!!!! I don't own a widescreen TV yet but I will buy one some day. In the meantime I'll be happy with the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. I want to see all of the movie. Nothing bother me more then a conversation happening and you only see one person talking because the other person was cut off when they went to fullscreen.

We buy all of our DVDs in widescreen. Did you see the promo that Roger Ebert did were he shows a scene from the movie "Desk Set" in full screen and widescreen? As he points out the scene takes a different meaning when you see it as it was intended. That may not be true for all movies but I will always go for the widescreen, and I don't even notice the black bars.

DH is watching a show on whales on WTTW right now and it's in wide screen (black bars, driving me crazy!).... so, if you have a wide-screen tv - does it know and eliminate the bars, or is it just stretched out???

A lot of movies aren't filmed in a 16:9 ratio, according to DH. As a result, you will get some black bars (depending on what you're watching, etc) but I've found they're not as noticeable as with a regular tv, plus the movies aren't stretched out. I find that watching a full-screen movie on a widescreen tv can make even the skinniest actresses rather wide.

Widescreen only. What's the point of watchinf full screen? You lose 1/3rd of the film in full screen, it's awful.

I agree with just wanting to see ALL of the movie. Somewhere there's a website that shows a full screen picture and a widescreen. The difference and the LOSS of what's shown on the full screen version was not lost even on my young granddaughter. She now makes her family nuts by requesting, no....insisting I think, on renting/buying Widescreen DVD's.

I've trained her well.

Magnify the image? I've never heard of that...

Most DVD players have a magnify or zoom function. It will take a widescreen movie and satisfy people who want the image to fill the screen. The benefit is that you are buying widescreen DVD's and you'll thank yourself when you finally get a widescreen TV.

Yes and no. Channels in HDTV will be properly sized by the HDTV receiver. Some shows shot in widescreen just need to be zoomed on widescreen TV's to fill the screen. Not all widescreen features are broadcast in HDTV, they were just shot on film vs. TV video.

What I want to know is why does the hi def stuff have to be so darn confusing. There are soooooo many techincal details and this 50 year old brain just does NOT absorb or understand most of it. I guess that's a question for a different thread though huh? LOL

i was even this way on my small standard tv. With my new 53" Widescreen...there is no doubt what looks better!

That said, the reason Full screen has such a big market is that most TV's in peoples homes are still 4:3 asspect ratio! Only now are we really stating to see 16:9(widscreen) begin to make a dent in the market.

99% of our movies are full screen. I HATE THE BLACK BARS. The only movie I watch in WS is Pirates of the Caribbean, and thats only because I couldn't find it in FS. I won't watch WS movies.

We recently discovered to our dismay that our local video store now carries only full screen versions of movies. We try to only watch widescreen.....can't figure out why the store isn't carrying them and the teenager at the counter couldn't tell us either.

Are you partial to widescreen or full screen? I'd sooooo much rather see the whole movie, from side to side.

Widescreen all the way! The main TV we have is wide screen and my laptop is too.

You just miss so much with the feel and look of a movie when you chop it up for full screen.
