Why would standard be more expensive than garden view for boardwalk villas?

Title pretty much explains it all. I was modifying my upcoming trip and noticed that the standard view I had originally booked was around $10 more a night than garden view. This is for one bedroom villa. It’s a not a lot, but I thought that standard view was the cheapest options at the hotels?

Are you renting points or looking at a cash reservation through Disney? DVC standard views usually cost fewer points than other view categories in the same resort, but I don’t know how Disney decides to charge for the villas they rent to cash guests.

Have seen this for a while for regular Disney rentals, although usually the difference is closer to only $1 per night cheaper for pool/garden 1BR than standard view, and sometimes no difference. Pool/garden views for studios are significantly higher than standard (the Disney site does not even show 2BRs as a choice anymore). Do not know the reason for the 1BR difference, although I would guess the inventory for 1BR pool/garden is much higher than any other rooms shown, and possibly many usually go unreserved (e.g., the closer you get to any dates, the more it appears that the only rooms still available are 1BR pool/garden views), and their lower nightly price is designed to get more to try to reserve those 1BRs

Interesting, I know that in the past Disney would overbook cheaper cash rooms planning to upgrade people - the CEO actually said in one of the stock earnings calls they did this & I remember threads about the outrage of people objecting to being ’upgraded’ from Pop/all stars to SSR. I’m surprised Disney doesn’t just over book people into ‘cheaper’ standards and then ‘upgrade’ them to pool/garden view when they arrive.

Thanks! I was wondering if I made a mistake not selecting the standard view if it was better. I figured any saving would be nice even if it isn’t much

It's possible that it could have something to do with the discounts. Let's say when you booked your Standard View with the $500 off 5 nights (or even AP discount) perhaps 1 of those nights was "sold out" in terms of discounts for Standard View when you booked. So if a 5 day trip then only 4 of the 5 days was discounted. Now perhaps the Garden View has all 5 nights discounted. This could lead to what you are seeing. We ran into this quite a bit in our pre-DVC days on last minute trips. The AP discount would seem really low (as in not much of a discount) but it was because only 1 or 2 nights of our stay was discounted.

That makes sense, except there’s no discounts out for November yet. At least none that I’m seeing.

Got it. Sounded like the trip was sooner than that. They released packages / rates for 2023 on June 8. Sometimes that means a rack rate change for the remaining part of the current year as well. That's what could have happened (but odd given it seems the rate went down).
