Why was society encouraged to be vapid and dumbed down in the 2000s and early 2010s?

It seemed like during the 2000s men were encouraged to be overly obsessed with exercise, muscle cars, and the NFL while women wanted to be mansion owning reality show stars.

What was to blame for this?

Hollywood?

Has there been a pushback against this?

It seems like there is no more stigma against fantasy themed TV shows with the massive success of "Game of Thrones".

How would you feel if there was a massive cultural backlash against excessive materialism and the next generation of youth wanted to be both smart and physical?

Not sure, KISAD92. I'm going to have to think on this one a bit. How about you, what are your thoughts about these?

Blame Hollywood? You’re basically only reflecting Hollywood in your comments. People in the real world are living lives quite a far reality from what you see there, and doing so happily. Turn off the TV, step back from the screens, and get out more. Get involved with your community, volunteer, put yourself in places where you can meet some diverse people. I think you’ll find most people, including younger ones, doing what the species has done for millennia - working, learning, developing relationships, building families and contributing to society while trying to pursue a comfortable, secure lifestyle.

Society has ALWAYS been encouraged to be "vapid and dumbed down" - or more accurately ignorant and placated. It has always been easier to control a population like that. That said, it's also no grand conspiracy or anything - most of humanity is perfectly fine with things that way, and the media we consume reflect life far more than we take after it.
