Why was Bradley Cooper chosen to voice Rocket?

When I have seen Guardians Of The Galaxy I cannot figure out how Bradley Cooper became Rocket. Because Bradley is better known for the remake of A Star Is Born and when I hear Rocket's voice I cannot believe his voice is Bradley Cooper's. How did Bradley Cooper become Rocket?

It should be noted that GotG came out in 2014, and Cooper was cast in 2013. Well before A Star is Born.

And While Cooper was definitely a name in 2013 being in 2 Hangover movies and Silver Linings Playbook among others if you look at his actor credits he has a much stronger filmography after 2013 then before. So they got him at the perfect time.
