Why The Meanness...Subtle or Not-So-Subtle

Hmmmm... just as a webmaster. And that's my final answer!

The political debates seem to always get nasty. I've been accused of being a whining liberal and a close minded conservative, at times over the same actions here! It gets to be funny, the way each faction accuses the DIS and our entire moderating team of being in cahoots with the opposition. Guess that must mean we're fair and balanced. :teeth:

I don't look forward to Novembers...

I forgot Kathy. Am I supposed to be the liberal or the conservative this week? :teeth:

Can I put in my suggestion now for a political board. ;)

(hey you have to admit I didn't ask for the debate board back) :teeth:

I was a regular on one of the threads that went poof the other night (but I was out of town for the drama). I spent a lot of time making friends. After over a year on the Disboards, I was finally part of a group that I could just share stuff with. While, I am upset that it was taken from me, I got over it and found my friends.
I have seen a lot of things said over the last year that were not nice, and some were plain disrespectful. I don't think that what is happening now is new or different, it is just affecting me now, which makes it hurt a little more. I am upset that a few people ruined it for the rest of us.
To the OP: As for not coming around the CB anymore, I hope you do. It is generally a fun place to be. Heck, this is where I get all my news! I learned about Star Jones :rolleyes1 , I started using Bare Minerals, rented a movie I didn't think I would like and loved, found out spoilers for my favorite tv shows, got a tag about a rogue cow that I still believe is somewhere in my neighborhood. . . I could go on and on. It's a good place to be. :sunny:

Well said Sthronds! and Webmasters it's good to see you around :teeth: sometimes i think you all are imaginary :) MY DH thinks the whole DIS is imaginary.

I posted my original question and then had to leave for fear of what might come out....but I have to say - WOW and THANKS!!!

I know we all have our bad times. I guess I'll just chalk it up to that. No - try as some might - I haven't been scared off the CB. I think there really are some nice posters.

I appreciate everyone's honesty in helping me to understand ----- WE'RE ALL JUST BEING HUMAN.....got it!!!

Thanks. And have a great day everyone.

I just wanted to say that you should definitely stick around on this board. If anything is unpleasant just ignore it. That's what I try to do!!! I stick to the threads that lack controversy. (I NEVER EVER go to the political threads, nothing good could come from that.) :teeth: Way too much fun is had on this board to jump ship over a few issues!! Stick around and have some fun!!

Shelby

The boards are like life...everyone you meet in life isn't nice, and neither is everyone here, but the majority of people are very nice here.

I also think theat the Internet in general lends itself to people "saying" htings that they wouldn't necessarily say to you in a real conversation. Most people are much braver when they are anonymous then they are when you know who they are.

Ya know, some of those other boards are way meaner than this one...... where do you think the refillable mug arguments came from???

:goodvibes

Can I just say, in a very pleasant voice...
I have been involved in one of the aforementioned "mean" threads, and wow. We didn't realize we were being mean.
Some of us were hurt when a thread we frequented was closed after a few new people made some not so nice posts. Those comments were not at all in line with the tone of the thread. It had been running peacefully for a month with absolutely no complants. Moral of the story...we were disappointed.
Some of us made comments out of frustration that the mods shut us down. And "hahaha, when will we be shut down again?" We're poking fun at ourselves for being part of a thread that was closed--there is kind of a stigma attached to it, don't you think? --even though we were the innocent bystanders! And to some degree, poking fun at the mods for closing the thread instead of deleting the bad posts from an otherwise innocent thread.
And while I'm at it. Yes. We were all friends there. We still are. We converse. We have gotten to know one another and will continue to seek out one another. I will defend that to the end. Why is it wrong for us to have a meeting place here, in the community, to share our morning coffee and find out how things are going?

As another frequenter of the aforementioned *poofed* thread, I agree with every word ArkMom has written and I've taken the liberties of adding bold to express my opinion a little more clearly.

In a matter of 5-6 days, our fun, peaceful, silly thread went from fun, peaceful and silly, to a campsite for some posters who seem to no longer be with us. If that thread were still around, one could plainly see how, in just days, the majority of the posting went from being done by the "regulars", having fun posting about nothing and everything all at once, to being done by the "newbies", who were openly challenging the "cliques" while becoming one of their own. Let me firmly state that these new posters were originally welcomed by the "regulars" (as I had been just a week or two previously), but as their posts, both on our thread, and other threads on the CB, became more rude and rebellious, the "regulars" started laying low, while the "newbies" ran rampant, using our thread as a "base", if you will. Never once were they asked to leave or admonished for their behavior by anyone on the thread.

So, yes, when the thread itself, with all it's history of fun and frolick disappeared, the "regulars" were disappointed and felt as if we had all been punished for the poor decisions of a few. I also wish that just the offending posts could have been deleted, and welcome WMAlex's news of upgraded software to make it easier for the mods to do just that.

I'm hoping also, that all this blows over soon. But I have no plans to go anywhere, because I have made friends with people on the CB in just the 3 weeks since I've been visiting regularly. We post in common threads and we play well with others. And for that, I don't think we should be made to feel guilty.

I'm gonna go be silly now.

If you want the truth, luvmydogs and I are really the webmasters--they are our aliases, but don't tell anyone, it's a secret. :ssst: It does explain a lot, though, right? :lmao:

I hear fingers flying on keyboards all over cyberspace right about now, don't you? :p

I could never question the mods here. Not that they scare me....well ok maybe they do....kind of like the principal in school. You just hope you never do anything to make them notice you.

I actually was a member back in 2001 and left some time back because I didnt like the feeling the board started to have. It was shortly after the Debate Board was shut down. I missed the Dis though and came back. I guess you just have to try and ignore the mean stuff and go past it. It really is a nice place to hang out if you consider all the weirdos out there trolling around in cyberspace.

I generally pick and choose which threads I read. I can usually tell by the title or the first few postings if I want to continue. Things are usually nice but sometimes it can get a bit mean and you just need to back away and look elsewhere for a while-another board within disboards is always a good idea. Then come back later and things will be nice again. Like Dan said, it does tend to be cyclical. Have fun!

Hmm you've been noticed!
You make an interesting point though. No webmaster or moderator has ever claimed we are perfect. But if you take a look around the internet I think we strike a decent balance between "wide open" boards and very strict boards.
There is NO way we can make everyone happy.
