Why such different reviews??

Different strokes for different folks! My boyfriend and I are not the fancy type - always going to local pubs for dinner or chain restaurants like Friday's or Olive Garden. The fancy thing does not appeal to us, so we avoid the signature restaurants. Other people rave about them but to us, we would not like it. I also agree that it has to do with the part of the country you are from. I am from Buffalo, NY - a notorious food city and home of chicken wings - so we have high expectations for certain types of food. And like any hotel or restaurant, some people just have bad experiences for whatever reason. I never take an opinion on restaurant to heart until I try it myself. If everyone thought it was bad, they'd be out of business!

We were at WDW a couple of weeks ago (DH, me, and DD10). My older DD20 was also there with her father and his GF's family. They dined at H&V for dinner and absolutely hated it. DD20 said she'd never, ever go back there again.

I was worried, because I heard all the bad reviews here about H&V, and then my older DD stated it was awful too. Our family went ahead with our Fantasmic! H&V dinner ressie (which was only a few days after DD20 was there), but guess what? We all liked the food VERY MUCH! Including my younger DD10, who is quite picky about what she eats.

I have no clue why within just a few days, one family hated the food, but another family enjoyed it a lot. :confused3

I believe that EVERY person has local favorites that may dictate their preference in taste in refernce to ethnic cuisine. I live in a small town in Maine, however aside from great lobster, we also have restaurants that showcase excellent Italian, German, Indian and French menus, just to name a few. Go to a restaurant in Disney based on what YOU think you and your family will like. We all have different palates and likes/dislikes. Pick the restaurant that is appealing to YOU.

The way I look at it, is we all have different taste and expectation. I will try everything at least once if not twice before saying I won't do it again. For exemple last month I had a really really bad meal a Narcossees yet I'm going back in August because I can't imagine a restaurant begin so bad. We also had CRT last October and it was bad yet we went back this past May and really enjoy our meal. I think service also plays a big role into people satisfaction.

I have never really had a "bad" meal at Disney. Sometimes I found I didnt like what I ordered, so you make sure you dont do that again!

We are not really picky people, I had McDs for lunch and it was good! Love some french fries:)

We generally enjoy our meal, only one Disney Restraunt has ever been so off that I wont go back.

Mostly because of the obvious - everyone is different. What I look for in a good experience at a restaurant isn't likely to be exactly what anyone else looks for - but someone might have *similar* tastes.

Part of what makes reviews on forums difficult is that for the most part, the reader has NO IDEA what type of person the reviewer is. For instance, my last trips to WDW, it has just been me and my mom in a wheelchair for the majority of our stay there. Sometimes we are joined by my friend who lives much closer to Disney than we do. My mom has had brain surgery and sometimes that effects her speech. All of this factors into my restaurant experience.

The wheelchair gives us an opportunity for more things to go wrong than a party that doesn't include a wheelchair. That server who was so kind and patient to you might have been frustrated when my mom insisted on getting out of the wheelchair to sit in a regular chair.

The server who is impatient and rude with us might be great for a party who is in a rush and knows immediately what they want, for example.

I drink a lot of water - its been my beverage of choice since I was a child. I do get irritated if my glass sits empty for an extended period of time - its not like I can just get up and refill it myself, you know. That's my server's *job*. So if my refills are slow in coming, that has an effect on my opinion of a restaurant. Others who don't drink a lot with a meal would think I'm being picky.

Numerous visits have an effect, too. Some of the restaurants are just less magical and special when you visit them more frequently. The person who finally got into Le Cellier and was wowed by the experience could have had the *exact* same experience someone had on their 5th visit. By the 10th visit it isn't magical, its just what is expected.

And of course, by your 4th or 5th visit, you might now realize that Tutto Italia isn't any better than your favorite local Italian eatery back home, so you skip it in favor of another restaurant. You might read other people (like me) say that they can get food of equal quality at a better price back home, but this might not be true for *you*.

And yet another factor is something as simple as salt. :) The cook one night might be heavy handed with the salt - which would be great for someone who likes salty food and horrible for someone who doesn't. This extends to most restaurants - the kitchen staff rotates somewhat and while the recipes are identical, one person's pinch is another person's dash. Sometimes the small variations make the biggest impressions.

I've always wanted to find or create a review site where everyone had comprehensive profiles as I think most reviews are fairly useless for real-life application without knowing a bit more about someone and their expectations of what they are reviewing. This doesn't apply, of course when half a dozen people post that the wait for Ohana was so long and the staff unorganized - I think things like an hour long wait is a more objective statement than "I didn't like the food."

Everybody has different tastes, likes/dislikes, expectations, cooks could have a bad night, etc.

For instance, Mama Melrose gets ripped all the time and we have never had a bad meal there. There are diehard lovers of Whispering Canyon Cafe and we absolutely hated it -- thought the food was fatty, undercooked and just lain gross.

With the exception of Hollywood & Vine, I often tell people they should try a certain restaurant themselves because everyone is different.

It really just depends on someone's taste. I have a very good friend who is very picky about food. We can go to the same restaurant and I'll love the food and he'll think it's just "okay" or even bad. Same day, same time, same chef, possibly the same dish.

"I didn't like the food" reviews are thus ignored by me, because I know that people just have different tastes. I'm more interested in reviews where the service is bad - I'm more likely to avoid a restaurant for that reason.

Funny! I'm the exact opposite. I want to hear about the food. Anyone can experience bad service on any given day at any restaurant. We're dealing with human beings, after all. I always thought someone mentioning bad service as the reason they didn't like a restaurant was a total waste of time to read. To me, it's totally irrelevant. The only time the service has ever impacted my decision is with Coral Reef. That restaurant constantly gets panned for bad service & poor management. When it happens that often with different servers, there must be a problem. Poor management would be a problem at any restaurant. Now I see some people consider a report of bad service as a reason not to visit a restaurant. Obviously, all info is important to someone, so it's good to include everything.

To answer the OP, I think one big factor is the type of food people have been exposed to. Some people have been exposed to higher quality food than others. If you've never eaten at fine dining restaurants in the real world, WDW's food will taste better to you. Those who frequent those fine dining restaurants will notice the lesser quality. It's much easier to please a person who considers typical chain restaurants a good to great meal. One can get the most out of reviews, if they can determine which reviewers have the same type of eating habits they do.

My only complaint about many of the reviews on this board are that they are unclear about what people are basing them on. Are people's tastes subjective? Obviously. I cannot fathom why many chain restaurants do the business they do, but people seem to like them, so there you go. That said, I do want to know if a restaurant's food appears fresh or too bland or too salty. How was the service? I recently read something written by a chef explaining the various elements that make for a great meal and yes, great food is a key element, but service and ambiance are also very important, too, thus many of the glowing reviews of Disney restaurants. Overall, though, it seems that there are a lot of places at Disney that are not worth it, while there are a lot of places that are. It depends a lot on personal preferences in the end.

I guess thats what is so confusing...is it the food or the service that reviewers don't like?

For me the food is what is most important..the service is secondary...thats what the tip is for.

I think we just have to give a resturant a try and see for ourselves...

I have to say the only place I read reviews about and did agree with was Sci fy and coral reef....I would give sci fy another chance but not coral reef.
Now see thats just my opinion LOL

It is because a good meal is completely subjective. Two people can sit next to each other and have the exact same meal served the exact same way and one will love it and the other hate it.

Yes.

Last weekend we were in Vancouver, BC and went to Old Spaghetti Factory (why? who knows. we have one in walking distance at home. hubby's choice.). I found the food absolutely disgusting (and I looooove OSF usually). The bread was nasty, my linguini was horrid. I tried hubby's spaghetti with mushroom sauce, UGH. The only things that were good were the garlic butter (you could see actual pieces of garlic in it!) and the coffee, and then I managed to spill my coffee everywhere (and the server didn't refill it, though he did help clean it up).

Hubby and son loved their meals, and hubby ate my pasta for lunch over the next two days.

Same food, same moment...different people.

Others who don't drink a lot with a meal would think I'm being picky.

Exactly. Water is great to be refilled for me, but I don't want ANYTHING else to be refilled unless I'm actually empty. I do not like having my coffee "refreshed", because I like my coffee in a certain way and if you refresh it I have to mess with it again. And if I've ordered a once in a blue moon soda, I do NOT want any more than that first glass...a server refilling it will be just wasting soda.

While others want their drinks refilled every time they take a sip, practically.

With the exception of Hollywood & Vine, I often tell people they should try a certain restaurant themselves because everyone is different.

And we had a lovely, tasty breakfast at H&V in December and I would recommend it. :) (they had REAL maple syrup available, not just the maple-flavored corn syrup stuff! how cool is that? only Kona had that as well...not even Boma)

I guess thats what is so confusing...is it the food or the service that reviewers don't like?

That's why you really want to read the whole review, and hope that you can see all the factors that went into their enjoyment of the meal.

I always notice that the reviews of the Italian restaurants are very split. Seems NY/NJ people hate them for the most part LOL because there are lots of Italians in the NY/NJ area, most know really good home cooked italian meals and really good restaurants and pizza.

People who live in areas where Olive Garden,Dominos and Pizza Hut are their best examples of Italian food seem to LOVE those restaurants at Disney

:rotfl:

I have noticed after a disappointing meal at a favorite restaurant sometimes that perhaps it was a holiday and the usual chef is on vacation or there is a new chef trying out new recipes.

I love the reviews here because they get me jazzed to go to certain places. The one thing that I dont like about the reviews here is that people are overly flattering about things that are just not that good, just because they are at disney. You can find people lovingly talking about their bottled water on here just because they got it there, so there is a lack of subjectivity. Not that it matters, I usually try things that get panned anyway because I want to see for myself.

The other thing that tends to happen on here is that when people are critical of something, they get attacked for it and someone immediately posts a counter opinion on the same thread. I hated schoolbread. Posting that in a discussion about why and the filling tasting of only butter about got me lynched! Just the nature of boards like this, so take what you will from the reviews and decide for yourself.
