Why post tragic news stories?

Not talking about major events like 9-11. The stories about local crimes and accidents.

Is it not enough that the local and national news is filled with them? Now all the internet discussion boards are filled with them as well.

I always wondered why people watch the news when it's filled with these tragic stories and now I have to extend that to why people would open these threads with the same stories.

Are people looking for sadness? :confused3

I always saw those types of posts as a way of stranger to be able to send prayers, good vibes, etc - to the 'victims' of whatever the tragedy may be. :confused3

I never saw them as a downer. I mean - theyre sad...but more of a way to, again, send good vibes, be more careful & aware, watch for (whatever) etc, etc.

I agree with CathrynRose.

I don't know. I am really depressed after reading about the 2 year old child being murdered at McDonalds. :guilty:

I should have known better than to open that thread....*sigh*

I always thought because, somehow that particular story touched their lives in some way. Just like what prompts people to open any thread on the Community board. :confused3 Maybe I'm wrong?

Perhaps for the same reason we slow down to look at traffic accidents on the highway... something in human nature, we're curious of other people's tragedy.

hmmmmm.... could be. IMO discussion boards have become just like the complaints about the news (focusing on the negative and tragedy).

Because if they weren't reported, people would complain that these incidents were being covered up. "Right to know" and all that jazz.

You just can't win.

On a discussion board? How can you cover up incidents on a Disney bulletin board? :confused3

I agree! It's important for the people who started the threads. Sometimes something affects us personally and we want to mention it, get support, etc. Don't open the threads if you don't want to read about it. There are plenty of threads that I don't open and some I open only if I'm in the "mood" for it and not if I don't have time or just am not feeling up to it.

I open them when the mood strikes or if the title of the thread sounds interesting enuf. I dont find them depressing, just informative. I like to read about things that are going on all over the US.

Like the one several weeks ago someone posted about the man and children who were killed by falling logs off a truck. I found that terribly tragic, sent it to several friends and family members and we all donated money to the fund that has been set up for the surviving child I believe it was. True its a very tragic story but without this board I would not have known about or been able to contribute some money which in turn made me feel good.

To generate sympathy, empathy, to help and support the victims and their families.

These may be concepts that are difficult for you to understand, cardaway, given the clueless tone of your question. But as I am a "practitioner of the healing arts" (per our state's statues), I guess those feelings come naturally to me.

Of course, if you don't like what I post, you could always save us both a lot of grief and put me on your "ignore" list.

Sorry - misunderstood the question. Thought they meant reporting these stories in general.

My bad. :thumbsup2 Forgive me?

Clueless? And speaking of tone, I have no idea where that was coming from.

Reporting these already reported stories on a message board. Most of them are simply links to things well covered elsewhere.

No way do I think not linking to them or posting about them could result in covering something up. Maybe if the subject was political stories... ;)

And at least on the internet you don't see people going to the scene to report from it. Every time I watch the news I think of the money the network could save if they didn't waste time and money sending somebody to stand in front of the building, or the road, or the...

I thought maybe that's what happened -- all forgiven. :teeth: :goodvibes

ITA! :thumbsup2 Good grief, I thought the CB was to discuss anything. Sometimes things happen, and for some reason or another we feel a need, at that time to voice our outrage or compassion for a certain incident.
I think it makes us (collective us) more human or humane.

I also find it comforting in some way just knowing that we aren't so wrapped up in our own lives that we can still find time to think about others. Just my point of view.
