Why not build more Moderates?

Though the Deluxes are completely wonderful in every way, you sure gotta pay a pretty penny to stay at them. Why hasn't Disney been building more moderates? (Or does anyone know of future plans to?) It seems they've only concentrated on Value and (especially) Deluxe over the past decade. Coronado was the only addition to mods whereas Deluxe got a handful and so did Value. Is that new one Saratoga Springs (is that the name?) going to be a Deluxe too? princess:

Saratoga Springs is a Disney Vacation Club (Home Away From Home Resort).

Coronado Springs resort opened in 1997.

The Animal Kingdom Lodge is the only deluxe built since Coronado Springs opened.

I am sure they build to support the market.

Current room counts:

Value 8640 (includes only the open half of Pop Century)
Moderate 7135 (Coronado Springs and Caribbean Beach are huge resorts; Riverside is almost as big)
Deluxe 6421
Home Away From Home (DVC) 1634 (not counting Saratoga Springs)

But, the moderates do tend to have significantly more rooms than the deluxe resorts: CBR has 2112 rooms, CSR 1967 rooms, Port Orleans a total of just over 3000 rooms. This is a total of more than 7000 rooms. The three All Stars taken together have 5760 rooms, as will Pop Century when it is built out, so there's little question that the number of value-priced rooms has really increased. Of the newer deluxes (the ones built after the CR, Poly, and WL), AKL has about 1300 rooms or so, the YC has 630, the BC has 583, the BWI has 378, and the GF has about 900 rooms. So they've built about 3800 deluxe rooms in 4 or 5 resorts (depending on how you count YC and BC) over about the same period of time as around 7000 rooms in moderates, again in 3 or 4 resorts (depending on how you count the two parts of PO).

I suspect the number of rooms being built in these various price points reflects the marketplace demand. How often do visitors who want to stay at a moderate have to book deluxe or value instead? Doesn't Disney sometimes offer moderately-priced (no pun intended) upgrades to those calling to book value resorts?

Ahh....wow, all those quotes really put things in perspective. 4 mod resorts seemed so measily until you all pointed out how few rooms some Deluxes have. I guess they just have more resorts to pick from which makes it all the more fun. I was just thinking: YC, BC, Poly, GF, CR, WL, BW... and it just seemed like so many more. Thanks so much, DISers! Walt would be proud. ::MickeyMo ::MinnieMo
