Postal employees are part of the government and fall under government holidays. They do have some of their own authority, I guess, in that if the Federal Government is closed for a snow day in Washington DC for instance, the post office can decide if they want to venture out and deliever mail or not.
Chattyholic: As for the federal government being off, I really waiver on this one. I am a defense contractor that directly supports a part of the federal government. It appears that they are always getting time off for snow or things like this. In fact on Wednesday, here in Washington, they all got "59 minutes", meaning they could leave 59 minutes prior to their regular departure to "get outta town." Most of them took about 3 hours! When they all heard they got a day off, you should have seen the happy faces and the weekend getaway plans started. I was happy to hear that a few of them (like two) actually went down to watch the processional. I, on the other hand, work for a private company doing the same thing as them in the same location. Since my company doesn't have a bottomless spending account, like the Federal Government, it is not in their budget to give us a *free* day of leave every time it snows, or there is a special event, etc. I guess my feeling is, if all these private companies these days have to cut back salaries, benefits, and employees, just to keep afloat and make a bit of profit, then why doesn't the federal government have to do so also? I didn't get a raise for 2 years because our small company had to stay within it's cost (set by the Federal Government). They, on the other hand got 4% raises each year, plus the bonuses and cash awards that many routinely get. This runs deeper for me than this particular day off. On the other hand, the day off was more about the government as an entity paying respect to a former president, and I do understand that!
