Why no "Live Froms"?

I've only recently discovered these boards when we booked our very first Disney cruise and the boards I spend the most time on, cruise critic, have a much smaller (but still mighty!) DCL presence.

I'm not sure if it's just a cruise critic thing, or if there is some rule against it here, but I haven't seen anyone posting live from their cruise. Maybe it's because there is a much smaller DCL footprint vs other cruise lines so less of a population pool to draw from for those that would be interested in posting live from a ship.

I know some think that it may ruin a vacation to do so as they want to completely unplug. I actually really enjoy it and go back and relive vacations in the past by reading what I have written. I also find it a great way to unwind and reflect at the end of each day. I also really enjoy interacting with people in the boards while on board and following along with someone else's vacation.

Was just curious as to why this was.

As far as I know, there is no prohibition here on the DIS Boards against live posts.

Probably cost...wifi is expensive onboard. A lot of people post live on day of embarkation before they lose cell service and some do post from onboard but not many post "live" all cruise long.

I sometimes post while onboard but with no more internet cafes onboard I find it really a pain to use my smartphone to type any lengthy post from onboard. Plus I always seem to have a problem with my wifi access.

Every once in a while there are people who post from their cruise. Cost, spotty and slow internet and the fact that they are on a cruise usually means people post after they are back home.

Just to add one other potential factor; the people on Cruise Critic (and I am a member there) tend to be much more into actual cruising. The DIS Board folks in general are more about Disney.

Yes, making a very broad generalization here. :badpc:

Have you looked on the DCL trip report section to see if anyone is doing that?

I personally find them irritating when done on cc (and on the themeparks board here) and wouldn't want them on the boards here where there are alternative areas for them. That's what the trip report section is for, in my curmudgeonly opinion. (for Royal here there's no other section so the board is a catchall...but I wish there was a trip report section here for Royal, too!)

Another possible explanation might be the pace of a Disney cruise. Mind you, I haven't really cruised other lines, but my impression from reading reviews and reports is that most other lines focus a lot on lounging and relaxing. While I definitely get down time on a cruise, I'm certainly being active more often than not. I haven't found much time for web surfing or report writing while on board.

Many of the "live from" reviews are popping up now due to other lines great internet packages. They are becoming pay one price for unlimited access instead of by the minute or by the MB. Many other lines also offer internet as a loyalty perk so it doesn't cost anything for people who sail frequently to post to CC a "Live from" review.

This is interesting. :scratchin I've never seen a "live review".
Also: on my previous cruises, I usually shut my phone off (and let everybody know in advance that I will be away for a week or whatever length of time). This internet package will open up a new window while cruising..... I'm going to look into the options now!

I think most people have hit the nail on the head...

* Pricing and performance for shippernet.
* People being on vacation and relaxing rather than being a news reporter.
* Pricing and performance for shippernet.
* Too busy having fun on the vacation.
* Pricing and performance of shippernet.

It is not surprising to me that there is no trip report section for RCCL. After all, the "dis" in the name "disboards" stands for Disney.

another reason to NOT post "Live from ... (your ship name here)" is personal security. Facebook, twitter, the DIS, etc are pretty open to anyone.

Announcement on Social Media: "Hello everyone. I will be enjoying a week long vacation on a ship. Please come on by the house and take whatever you want because no one will be watching"

Yea, that's a little extreme.

I don't think there is a trip report section since it's not a very active board. This is a TA owned website and DU doesn't sell just Disney. They offer RCCL, Celebrity and NCL Spirit of Aloha for cruise lines. In fact, the next DIS Podcast cruise is on the Oasis of the Seas. They also book non-WDW hotels and Universal vacations.

I used to write my trip reports religiously (not here on Dis). I have read "live" reports but I don't think I'd ever do one that way. The style doesn't suit me. When I'm on the cruise I'm thoughtfully snapping pics & keeping loose notes. Not very time consuming. I prefer to edit my pics & compose a cohesive, occasionally informative report. Can't really do that live. So from someone who has written maaaaaany reports/reviews, it's just too time consuming in the moment & not my style.
