Why is the Diamond Celebration happening in May?

I thought Disneyland's anniversary was on July 17th, so why are we celebrating it in May?

It is July 17th. The 50th anniversary kicked off at the beginning of May in 2005.

I assume that Memorial Day weekend is considered the beginning of the "summer" season at DLR, the Party is the days before that.

Of course it's so they can celebrate DL's anniversary over 2 summer tourist seasons. But I think the big ceremony is going to take place on July 17.

Glad this question was asked! We would really like to celebrate the 60th but a trip this year is not in the budget. If we visit June 2017 we should still be in the 60th birthday window, correct?

Disney has not announced the ending dates yet. But they typically run their celebrations for about a year & 1/2. June 2017 is over 2 years away. I would think the 60th celebration would be long over by then.

I agree, the 60th celebration will probably be long gone by summer of 2017!

My thought was this way they can get any bugs worked out with the parade and fireworks. I could be wrong but it made sense to me.

I had a serious conversation with someone "in the know" about this during the event. Bottom line? Money. It's a great kick-off theme for this summer, they see tons of draw to anniversaries, and it gets amazing publicity.
