Why Is Pop Century As Good As The Mods and Deluxes?

I've read that people think that PC is just as good as any mod. or deluxe. Why is that? Is it because it is just such an awesome resort or is it because it is new?

I havent been to PC but here is my take. I believe its because of the price. Its value for your dollar. I think when people compare it with how much they paid for it (such as $55 a night) its a better value. I dont think it has all the amenities or the pool that the deluxes have. So if money is no object, yes a deluxe is much nicer than PC. But if your on a budget PC is a better value for your dollar.

I can't imagine anyone thinking PC or any value resort is as good as a deluxe. Perhaps they mean that using the hotel simply as a place to sleep it serves its purpose as well as a deluxe. Other then that there is NO comparison between a value and a deluxe. The rooms are almost twice as big, the amenities are many at the deluxes and few at the values. There are actual restaurants in the deluxes and you only have food courts in the values. The pools are so much better at the deluxes and less crowded. If you are going there just to use the room to sleep in then I'm sure it is fine. If you want anything more then that you will have to stay at a deluxe.

I haven't stayed at Pop yet (February 1st - woo!), so I'm basing this on my stays at the All Star Music. I don't think anyone could say that a Value is "as good as" a Mod or a Deluxe, but here's why I prefer to stay at Values:

1) Cost. Which isn't a determining factor in and of itself, but given the other reasons below, it works for me.

2) Food court vs. restaurants - don't care about this. I always make PSs for sitdowns at the parks and other resorts anyway; I'm not one to want to eat at "home" every night.

3) Room size - I am always either by myself or with just one other person. The Value square footage is more than sufficient for that party size.

4) Pool Theme - I use the pools pretty infrequently, and when I do, it's just to "veg out." Actually, if anything, lack of theming and slides is a plus for me, because they make the pool areas more low-key. (Generalization, I know.)

5) Bell Services - this can be a pain, particularly when checking out and I have a lot more (heavier) luggage, but it's not a major problem by any means.

6) Outside vs. inside halls - makes no difference to me.

7) Room service - see #2. Probably wouldn't use it to speak of anyway, so no big deal. Same for mini bars.

I have stayed at the Poly and the Beach Club, and have no problem whatsoever staying at the Values.

In regards to the original question... Is Pop Century as good as the Moderate and Deluxe resorts?

Well, it depends on what you mean.

Amenity wise, the answer would be no. A Value resort does not have the amenities that a Moderate and Deluxe resort have. That's really the major distinguisher.

However... I will say this. Pop Century has the same (if not better) level of Disney Guest Service that you will find at ANY Disney resort, regardless of level or price. So, in that sense, YES, Pop Century IS as good as other higher level resorts.

Value Resorts may not have Bell Services, but they do have Luggage Assistance. You may borrow a hand cart to do it yourself, or you can give your luggage to us to take to your room, and to pick up at your room at the end of your stay. And unlike Bell Services, you do not need to be in your room, because we are not a tipped position.

OK, I think I did a bad job posting this one. I KNOW I read that people think it's just as nice as a mod or deluxe. Maybe they were talkinga bout the atmosphere. I'll just have to check it out next week when I'm there :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Theming is all a matter of personal preference. Each resort has its own style and theme, and comparing them is like comparing apples to oranges... Of COURSE the Grand Floridian is going to be elegant and pretty... that's its style and theme. Just like Pop Century's style and theme is bright colors, larger than life icons, and trips down memory lane.

As for which is better... like I said, it's just a matter of personal preferences. Some people might prefer the woodsiness of Wilderness Lodge, whereas other folks might like the blast from the past icons at Pop Century. That's the great thing about Walt Disney World that sets it apart from anywhere else in the world -- there's something for EVERYONE! :)

Okay, I have to admit that when I first stayed at a value (ASMo) I was a bit taken aback. When I entered the room and saw the small table and chairs and no coffeemaker, blowdryer/iron it was like, "This will be interesting". Even on road trips, we always at least stayed overnight at a BestWestern or Holiday Inn. The resort itself was magical. The theming and the whole upbeat atmosphere was great!!!
Our first moderate stay was CBR. It was here that I realized that I did NOT use: the coffeemaker, the blowdryer, the iron, the sit-down restaurant, the hot tub and I did go down the slide once to say that I did.

Our first deluxe was AKL. WOW!!! What a beautiful place. So luxurious. This is what the values and mods cannot touch.

I cannot wait to stay at PC....I know it will be a blast. For the money, it can't be beat. For luxury and feeling pampered, though, nothing beats a deluxe!

A value resort is nothing like a deluxe. You don't have as much space in your room, smaller beds, one sink, smaller closet, less drawer space, you don't have turndown service, sit down restaurants, morning paper to read, room service, valet parking, etc, ... you give up all those extras. It's just a "no frills", clean, fun, place to stay. :)

And that's exactly why Deluxe's are so much more expensive -- the amenities and extras they have.

Sorry, Tyler, I hadn't forgotten about your cast "role." :) I just struggle with Luggage Assistance vs. Bell Services because 1) I'm impatient ::yes:: and 2) I *must* be there when my luggage is transported because I'm totally incapable of not tipping for that service, officially "tipped" position or not. Don't know why, don't expect everyone to feel and do the same, but it's just my thing. :)

comparing apples to oranges ...

we have stayed at all levels of disney resorts - actually our family's favorite is AllStar Movies. That said we are all excited about staying at Pop Century NEXT WEEK!!!! (sorry I got carried away).

We actually find that we miss not having a food court when staying at a deluxe. My family enjoys eating. However, we cannot manage 3 sit down meals per day - we will all be so stuffed we would be miserable. It is nice to be able to grab a hamburger or some chicken fingers for the boys after a full day of touring.

The deluxes all have a food area that you can get burgers, chicken fingers, pizza, uncrustables, sandwiches, and so on. I didn't know if you knew this or not. At least the Poly and the WL do. There are tables and booths to sit at and even microwaves and toasters for your use. It may not have a huge selection of food as the foodcourts do but it does have plenty to chose from.

mom2boys, I see from your signature that you've stayed at the BC and BW. Neither of those has a true "food court", and I missed it too. ;)

I do love (some) of the deluxes, but I also loved POFQ. Put a balcony on one of those rooms, and BAM... :teeth:

I'm also excited about PC. I have a *wee* bit longer than nine days to wait, but it's closer than it was yesterday!! :D

Generally, you get what you pay for. I feel that at Pop Century you certainly do get what you've paid for.::MinnieMo

hannahryan, I certainly do hope so!
For what I'm paying ($49 + tax per room) I'll consider anything above a clean room and frequent transportation to and from the parks each day, to be pretty much icing on the cake. :D

We stayed at POP in Dec. for a week. During the week we explored all other resorts. My kids, (14, 11, and two 9 year olds.)Could not wait to get back to POP. They absolutly loved everything about it.
We had stayed at POR last year and while they enjoyed that they said POP was the new favorite!
While we were at the GF we played at the beach for awhile and had dinner at 1900 park fare and they totally enjoyed themselves but said they would much rather stay at POP.
We went to WL one night and had dinner at the Whispering Canyon and took the sleigh ride but again, they were ready to get back "home" to POP.
They loved the blue frozen coke and the total "larger than life" POP theme. The food court was great and all the CM's (inclulding Tyler ) were always there to make sure you had everything you needed.
From the Pizza delivery vans (midnight every night!) to the cute 57 chevy golf carts POP totally impressed my crew and we will be back.
By the way how crowded is the world during March 14 - 18th?:smooth:

I really wish I had known they would deliver our bags to our room when we stayed at the ASMu this summer. Getting my bags to my room was not the easiest thing I've done. I did call Luggage Assistance to come get my ECV on the day we left because my feet were swollen and it was difficult for me to walk. The CM who came to get it got a nice tip as a bonus too!

I've never stayed at a deluxe at WDW. In fact, the year they opened CBR was the first time I had ever stayed onsite. Most of the time after that I stayed at POFQ. Since it is closed now, my Sister and I stayed at ASMu when we went in August.

No matter who I go with, I'm generally a park commando, even in my scooter. So I don't spend much time in the room, or using amenities. I'm out of the room by 7:30, and back for a nap and change of clothes in the afternoon and then out again until at least 10pm. When I could do the clubs at PI, that time was 3am. Most amenities of the deluxe hotels would have been completely useless to me. By the time I get back to the room, Room Service is closed and all the lobby entertainment has gone home for the night, I don't drink coffee every morning and I don't have time for the paper in the morning, while I'm racing for the bus.

I was still worried about staying at a value since I was so accustomed to the mods. I worried for nothing. ASMu was just as nice and me and my Sister had just as good a time as we would have had a POFQ. I'm looking forward to the same good time this year, with DH, made even nicer by getting eight nights at PC for $549, which is close to what my Sis and I paid for 4 nights last year. One of these days I'm looking forward to being spoiled at AKL, but, until then the mods and values will do well for me. The price can't be beat!

I think the values are great for what you pay, if you want to stay on Dis property. We've often paid $49 plus tax. Last visit there, music was so noisy, we really wished we were at POR. I find POR much more relaxing...however, grands prefer the values. We'll be at POP shortly, and I'm looking forward to it..but I already know to expect one sink and small rooms. It will be new, so that is a plus.
