Why is Mary Poppins sometimes at the Princess Breakfasts?

We will be attending both Princess Breakfasts in January :D My daughters are huge Princess fans, but they don't have a clue who Mary Poppins is. Why is she at the Princess Breakfasts? I guess i'm just looking for a clever answer for my 2 DD's.

Mary Poppins is an "orphaned" character. She just doesn't fit into any sensible group of characters. I think it's nice that the princesses have agreed to put up with her, even if they do sometimes mutter to themselves that "she's not a real princess, just a bloody governess".

Of course if WDW costuming had the sense to never make a Mary Poppins costume in the first place, we wouldn't have this problem.

We asked our server "Gustav" at Cinderella's breakfast the same question. His answer was that Mickey Mouse, the boss, made Mary an honorary Princess. That explanation was good enough for my kids (3 & 8).

If your children don't know who Mary Poppins is, then they may be surprised by her behaviour. When we were there on 11/18, when the kids got their pictures taken with her she was very "proper", just like her character in the movie. She called my DS brother. "Brother, come over her and stand by your sisiter. Stand up straight and tall now - no slouching!" The kids did as they were told and both DH & I agreed we need Mary at our house! :)

Have fun! Jill

Don't know how old your DDs are but Mary Poppins is a wonderful movie to sit down with them and watch. Walt Disney magic at it's best!!

And besides, someone has to keept those princess' in line! ;)

I was happy to see a very pretty and proper Mary Poppins at CRT. Seeing her is a bonus imho. There are other "vintage" characters I'd like to see more of in the parks. In the past we'd seen Robin Hood characters, but this trip we saw only Friar Tuck. My kids have watched Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and some of those older ones although they aren't their favorites. Since when do Disney characters become obsolete?

Mary is, ahem, "practically perfect."

And, , since she won an Oscar (we won't mention that Julie Andrews person), she is HOLLYWOOD royalty. ;)

Besides: we don't know WHERE Miss Poppins came from, do we?

She just MIGHT be a princess, who happens to enjoy slumming it with those chimney sweeps...

From what I can tell, there arn't enough princesses to have all the characters at the meal there. Out of the six fairy tale Princesses, Ariel can't appear at either because of her fin, and Cinderella rarely makes it to Storybook Princess breakfast because she and Prince Charming have too many duties at MK to get to EPCOT often. Since Mary Poppins is a Disney heroine who wears a fancy dress, she often appears at the meals. Mulan has also been appearing at the Storybook Princess Meal as well and she's not a Princess either.

Well, I never explain anything, but ...

cream of the crop, tip of the top, is Mary Poppins, and there we stop!!

My almost 3 year old absolutely loves Mary Poppins. One of most favorite songs from the movie (which she is always singing) is "A Spoonful of Sugar" This movie is wonderful for toddlers.

I do agree she is a little out of place at a princess breakfast. She fits in a lot better at 1900 Park Fare where we have had occasion to see her.

That being said, we love Mary and even though she is not technically a Princess we feel lucky whenever we get the chance to see her.

Mary wears a beautiful white "princess" like dress - so she of course qualifies as a "princess." ;)

I agree with another poster Mary at CRT on Nov. 4th was also very prim and proper but so very sweet. 2yo DD really liked her British accent! LOL!
