Today at work, I had to a "People Strategy Assessment" survey. I guess it is to get an idea of what our work environment is really like. Anyway, I came across this question

"I feel free to say what I think even if it means disagreeing with my manager" and I was told to rank it. I ranked fairly low... pretty much right at the bottom. The only one I ranked that low was the one about being positive about the future :( Anyway, as long as I have ever had a job, I have never felt free to question the 'authority' or speak my mind if I knew that the uppers would disagree with that. That question really made me wonder why. Is it because I think they don't care? Is it because I think I will be repremanded or labeled as bad because I do question? Or am I just chicken?

That one question struck a chord with me (as well as the positive and upbeat about the future one) and it got me wondering am I the only one that way?

yup - i feel that way frequently. i do worry about the future here -- i have survived 5 rounds of RIF's but it seems like there's always more bad news coming out. :( at this point though, i'm thinking beggers can't be choosers and i'm just happy i still have a job (unlike many of my friends).

i am going back to school this fall to get my master's. applications for grad school this year are at record highs.

i should say though, that i love my supervisor and feel that i could tell her anything.

At work (I only have a week and a half left, and then off to camp for the summer and hopefully a permanent job with my degree in the fall) I used to say what I thought, because honestly I do know more than the managers, I have been there longer then them, (I didn't want to be a manager, not enough flexibility in work scedule and other things) and know how things really turn out. But the managers would always get mad at me for second guessing them, even when I turned out right, which was most of the time. One manager even had the gall to tell me that he would rather someone trip and fall over something and kill themselves and have me do what he told me to, them have me tell him that it wouldn't work and someone could hurt themselves. Becuase then I would have done what he told me to do, and the person that died would be his fault and that it wasn't my problem to worry about.
