Why is it that more praise is given for saving a situation from the brink of disaster (that you caused) than for doing it right and well in the first place and avoiding disaster altogether?

Because doing it right the first time isn't as dramatic as screwing it up and then "saving" it. We're a nation of drama addicts.

Example: The boy in the balloon yesterday. People are still talking about that.

I was thinking of something similar the other day. I met this woman who had been a heroin addict and had screwed her life up in all kinds of ways. She got her act together, "found god," and went clean. Everyone says how brave and incredible she is, etc, but wouldn't it be even more praiseworthy for the person who had never gone down that path to begin with?

I'm not saying she's not awesome for getting herself clean! But I agree with you about the fact that a person like that gets more accolades for getting clean than for a person who stays clean.

Reminds me of the Prodigal Son story Jesus told, how the good son was angry at the father for giving a big party for the bad son who finally came to his senses and repented.

:rotfl2: I was thinking the same thing.

Apollo 13: The successful failure.

Brink of disaster can cause death and when something malfunctions--there is concern of whether or not it can be rectified. The quick thinking IMHO is what gets praised.

And the people who fouled up--sooner or later are held accountable.

People screw up. Mistakes are made. Things happen. I think that how we respond to those things says a lot about us. I also think that addiction is something that deserves its own category. I am grateful to have never been addicted to anything worse than caffeine. Those who overcome it do deserve praise as long as they can stay on the right path. I imagine the climb out is very, very hard. On the other hand, there are the people who are completely negligent or worse...

What she said.

When my brother and I were younger I always had straight A's always very consistent, never got less than an A. My brother never got more than a C. My grandma told him, if he got an A she'd give him $20. I handed her my report expecting a good $100 - she said....it comes easier for you than it does for him if he works hard enough to get that A he deserves $20...

I guess I see her point but at 10 I felt like I was getting the short straw :lmao:

That's because you were. You were right at 10 - this was totally unfair. Why were your A's worth less than his?
