I guess sort of inspired by RickinNYC...but I've been wondering this myself lately (as that "BIG 4-0" creeps closer for me as well)...

just exactly WHY is it a BIG 4-0? Why is this age such a milestone? Why do women lie about their age to avoid this one? Couldn't we make it the BIG 4-1 so I have another year (and a few) to enjoy my youth?!?!?!

just wonderin'...

Well, I'm the big 4-1, and it's totally the same as the big 4-0. And both are the same as the little 3-9. ;)

Because the more emphasis and importance you put on it, perhaps someone will take the hint and give you a good present! LOL!

:rotfl: I like your philosophy!
I turn 40 in 2 days and it really is not a big deal, I am just thankful for everything I have up to this point!
I think turning "40" used to be a huge deal but it isn't that big anymore because in society 40, 50 or 60 just isn't that "old" anymore--or at least I hope that's the way it is since I'm heading that way! ;)

I agree with Rick. :)

I'm turning the big 4-0 in Disney in a couple of weeks!

maybe that's what I'm doing wrong...I'm really trying NOT to emphasize it!

Seems lots of folks have big celebrations for their 40th. I guess I should tell DH he needs to get busy, huh? :teeth:

I had my BIG 4-0 in March and got to join some friends in Chicago for shopping and eating weekend! I say milk it as much as you can - get some great presents and great trips!!! :woohoo:

I don't feel OLD until I think about my daughter heading to college in August :scared1:

Yeah...I can only imagine how my mom is feeling...I think my first task that day will be to call her and thank her.

I hit that milestone in less than a month, and yesterday was the first time someone said I was hitting "The BIG 4 0"

What's big about it? :D

my dh keeps asking me how I feel about turning 30 next year... It doesn't bother me at all ...I could care less... UNLESS I can get a trip to WDW or a cruise out of this... hmmm great plan guys!

I don't know why the big 4-0 bothered me but it did. The big 5-0 didn't bother me at all. :teeth: I too went to Vegas and WDW for the 50th. :thumbsup2

that's what I'm sayin... :rolleyes1 :teeth:

Whenever a friend of mine turned 40 I gave them a card that said "Welcome to My Decade!"

The forties is BIG... it's the time when we stop caring about where we should be in our lives and guess what... people stop ASKING!!!

If you're not married, if you don't have children, if you don't have your degree... by 40 people realize well, darn, maybe she's NOT going to do it.... :p

I don't like people telling me where I should be in my life, including my body clock or myself!

Now that the 40s are a part of my PAST, I still revere that decade. It was the decade I GREW UP, and the decade I learned more than I taught.

It IS BIG!!! :woohoo:

Wow Robinrs...that was great! Thank you! :thumbsup2

I am hitting the big 4-0 on August 21, not a big deal to me. But everyone around me seems to think so. I swear, if they make those "Lordy, Lordy look who's 40" signs and post them everywhere, heads are gonna roll!

Funny! I made sure that everyone in my family knew that I did NOT want any parties or any of that kind of thing for my big 4-0. I wanted my Vegas/Disneyland trip - and that's it.

They must have taken me seriously.

No Lordy, Lordy signs, no parties, no broohaha. ;)

Just video poker and Mickey Mouse. :teeth:

I think it is considered big because it is about the midpoint of life expectancy. Turning 40 didn't bother me in the slightest, and I don't expect any of the other decade milestones to either (well maybe 80 - then I'll feel OLD). People do make a big deal out of it though.
