I hate how expensive everything is here in Iceland. Went out yesterday, hoping to buy some "icicle" lights to hang around my house on the outside. Turns out it costs $1150!!!!!!!!!!! :confused3 Store manager told me he could offer us them for $900. That´s still waaaaaaayyyyy to much.

Asked my neighbours where they got theirs?- Canada! Cost $200 over there.

The difference almost pays for the flight to either the US or Canada. Anybody want to go christmas shopping??? :teeth:

Sorry about the lights. I guess ordering them online and getting them shipped wouldn't work?
I would love to come to Iceland! We have done a family cycling vacation and would like to do more and have read good things about Iceland.

Now I'm wondering what kind of lights you are referring to. It sounds like something that would be pretty inexpensive here. I would guess most people would be able to get pretty decent Christmas lights for their entire home for around $50-100. Little strings (25 ft?) of basic lights can be had for $2.

Can you shop on line?

I think I got ours for $2.50 a box. Are you talking about these things?

OMG, FREYJA: DH & I just saw one of those travel specials on the Travel Channel on Iceland and your country is just soooo beautiful but I will say the Host of the show said it is verrrrrrrrrryyyyyyy expensive in Iceland.

My DS' have flown back and forth many times to the UK and they seem to (from time to time) have a layover at your airport and they as well have said one of these days sooner than later they are going to just STAY right in Iceland and sightsee. They both said what they could see (having long layovers) is the country is SPECTACULAR!!!! :teeth:

The country truely is spectacular. I have travelled to approx. 20 countries and have never seen such beauty anywhere else.

Lots of people stop for 2-3 days when travelling from Europe to the US. Your sons should absoloutly do that. Doesn´t have to be too expensive (although my original post might sound that way :teeth: )

Freyja - is this something that could be shipped to you from here? If so, I'd be happy to help you out with getting them from the US at a much cheaper cost!

PM me if you're interested.

That's what I have no idea about! Hopefully Freyja would know and can let us know if it's something that can be sent from over here.

So many things are more expensive overseas. I own an online store (not selling Christmas lights, sorry!) and I have many customers from England, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, France, Australia, and New Zealand...even with the shipping charges, they save a small fortune buying from a US seller.

And in most cases the exchange rate is favorable as well.

In fact, I was reading a thread on the UK Disers board talking about all the foods and things they can't get over there and thought hmmmm.....someone needs to start a website selling giant bottles of Tylenol and Mountain Dew!

hmmm, are the 'plugs' and voltage the same in iceland?

I don't think they are - when we traveled in Europe I had to take an adapter for my hairdryer and other electronics.
