yesterday I backed into a wire attached to an electrical post, in the driveway of the organic farm I was visiting for food. LOL
yes I scratched my bumper, paint is missing in a spot, so I am off to the car store today to get some touchup paint.

my hubby just shakes his head, and says enjoy your 5 year old car for awhile longer.

Yep..............each time our older cars get a little bruise we reflect on how much less stress we experience when it happens to an older car and not one that is a few months old. I got hit from behind while completely stopped a couple of months ago. Just a little rash is visible on the back bumper after my DH waxed the affected area.

I so agree. I have this sad old 98 Taurus with almost 200K miles on it! Poor thing has so many bumps and bruises. But, Ive kept it very clean since I got it back in high school and have made sure i wax it every year to keep rust away (i live in indiana)...so when things happen to it, its nice to know unless its a huge thing, it doesnt really matter!

I'm driving a ten year old car that was bought new for me and I've been super, super lucky to have had no problems with it until at the end of last summer. The master computer that controls the a/c is no longer working. The heat works fine, thankfully. Just the part is 1100.00 and that doesn't include the labor and there's no guarantee a part is going to make the a/c work again. For 1100.00, I can put a down payment on a new car with working a/c. My parents already agreed that I need a new car and it wasn't worth the money to put into a ten year old car with no guarantees, so I am starting off with an 1100.00 down payment.

So, I am already starting to look and price vehicles. I am looking at either another new Chevy Cavillier or some sort of small SUV type. What do you all think? I work in a daycare center so I need room to transport supplies/materials/projects and tote around my niece and nephews to the park/zoo/shopping.

Really OT question, but how do you wax a car yourself?

What tools, products do you need?

My car is black and over the years has gotten really dull from sun damage...gotta love that Cali sun...but my car looks horrific... any tips?

I drive a 7 years old car with over 200,000 miles on it. It's a hybrid so I am never getting rid of it. I don't stress the little things.

Tools - wax and 2 towels.

Apply wax to first towel. Rub on car in a back and forth motion (in circles per the instructions will give you swirl marks.) Let the wax dry and buff off with the clean towel.

You need more than a wax. You wax a car every month. You need it detailed. Same concept, except wax protects a car and polish will strip oxidation and leave it unprotected. You must wax after you polish.

Waxing once a year is worthless. When I had more time, I use to polish twice a year and wax every month. When I polished my car, I didn't just do it once. It was hit twice with the polish, then waxed, twice a year.

I drive a 1993 grand prix.....I would love your 5 yr old scratched car:lmao:

And no we are not poverty level or anything, we just don't want a car payment when we have a car that starts every time. Yes, it does embarass me, but :confused3

Thank you for all the great tips!

Ok, so first I wash my car, then polish it (any kind of polish from Autozone? or is there a fav that you like?), then I wax it...and to maintain it, I'd polish it twice a year, and wax it every month right?

I figure, I'm going to have my 2000 Toyota Celica for a looong time, so I might as well make it look great right?

Unfortunately, hubby won't help me here, so you're all I got! :lmao:

Growing up we always used Turtle Wax. Not sure why but my dad seemed to like it. One thing he always made us do, too is wax it in the shade. The sun can burn it, I guess.

We're looking at getting a new car within the next year. Right now we have a 10 year old CRV. One of the cars that my husband likes is an Outback but it's 2 inches wider than our CRV. I keep telling him that I don't want to get a brand new car that he can hit with his car in the garage- which he often does now. Right now I don't care if he hits my older car but I'll freak the first time he hits my new car! :scared1: And parking in the driveway is not an option. So WE're looking at narrower cars like the Forrester.
