Why Guns?

Every time there is a gun incident in the US I think this but then it is an insensitive time to ask so here goes.

Why do you own or want to own a gun?

Edited, wanted to post a poll but messed up.

A lot of people own guns for protection. My friend always has a gun around the house because her husband's a police officer. Lots of people hunt. Honestly, there are many reasons to own a gun.

:confused3

Why are you confused, I asked a question, why do you own or want to own a gun. Not why do people own guns. I was asking a specific question of those on the DIS

I realized that after I posted, but didn't feel like editing it.

Sorry, I'm a bit hazy this week. I quit drinking coffee. :(

We own guns for hunting and target practice.

DH owns one for hunting.

In short, I don't have any desire to own a gun.

But given the basis upon which this country was founded, it will remain a fundamental right of the people to do so.

Yep, exactly. And I might add, because it's guaranteed in the constitution. The problem is, the squeeky wheel get the grease. In other words, all you hear about are the shootings. A lot of people own guns, like my father, who don't go around killing people.

ETA: I want to own guns because I like them and I like to target shooting.

I don't need a gun and have no desire to own one. I live in a relatively safe urban/suburban area, though. I could see why someone who lives more rurally would feel the need.

I don't own a gun and wouldn't own a gun. We don't have hunters in our household and as for protection, more people are injured in their own home with their own guns than by home invasions.

Because I am weak compared to those skilled at doing harm.

DH owns a few. When we lived in New Mexico, he was in an extremely rural area with lots of wildlife. He had the guns for protection, not just from bad guys but from things like bears, mountain lions, and rattlesnakes. He never had to shoot anything with them but did shoot them occasionally to scare off animals.

I have no idea why he keeps them now. They're hidden away in a gun safe.

For protection. The criminals are never going to get rid of their weapons and I want to be equally matched.

I have no idea. My husband owns many guns and I couldn't tell you why. He doesn't hunt anymore and we don't need them for protection. A few that he has are from his late father, and I'd never ask him to get rid of those, but I wish he'd sell the rest.

I don't argue with the right to own them, I just don't know why anyone would want one (other than hunters of course).

We own quite a few guns, actually, and I would really never consider using them for protection. By the time I got to the gun safe in the cellar, got it opened, got out a gun, found some ammo for it, got it loaded and aimed, my chance for protection would be over.

Like I said before we use them for sport exclusively.

I enjoy target shooting, as age, gender, and physical "shape" are not as important as many sports. I get the same satisfaction when I hit a great shot as a golfer does when she gets a hole in one.

I also know that I am better able to protect myself in an emergency, or at least I won't go down quietly.

BUT, I also feel that anyone owning any sort of firearm should have certified training in all aspects of ownership, including all safety rules.
