Why Dont you do DVC??

I agree with you here about what works for one might not work for another but threads like this shouldn't be posted due to the fact one will cry on another and it'll get out of hand as it has already done the last 21 pages. THe OP asked a certain question and those of us answered as to why we DONT. We didn't need people jumping in stating why we should or why we made such foolish decisions:confused3

The problem occurs when the answers are made as definitive statements. When people make definitive statements which are wrong or even perceived to be wrong, there will be a rebuttal from somewhere. And honestly, if the statements are wrong, then there needs to be a rebuttal - for if incorrect information goes unchallenged, people are going to read that as truth.

this seems snarky and snobbish to me. now we all know that you have a huge house and the poster you quoted doesn't. I know I'M impressed!;)

I wasn't being snarky or snobbish, I was saying I could not live in a place that small. I'm willing to bet she paid more for their 900 sq ft apartment in NY City than I paid for my 3500 sq ft home in Iowa. By a lot.

I'm curious...what leads you to believe that DVC members lack culture, as you put it, and only take their children to WDW?

When I read that statement yesterday the first thing that came to mind.......(and some will not like what I'm going to say. Sorry if this is tough for some to read.)

Hall of Presidents is never going to be the same as.....a long weekend in Washington, DC. for example. Smithsonian alone should be a must-do for any child....then add tours of the US Capital, White House (schools can still arrange these).....Monuments....Lincoln,Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, WWII, Viet Nam, Korea...the list is endless. Stop and see the VERY FLAG that Frances Scott Key struggled to see that night in Baltimore Harbor onboard that British Man O War. He wrote the lyrics to our national anthum....inspired by the flag you can now stand 5 feet from. Go one floor up....you can visit the First Ladies Gowns.....music......industry.....history....aviation......Smithsonian is endless and has somethng for everyone.

A few years ago we were visiting Gettysburg (another place every child should visit......the future of our union changed in those 3 days). By the way, FABULOUS new museum there. We wondered if children still "got it" or if parents even CARED enough to expand the minds of their children. On the 20th Maine's momument, we found pine branches wrapped in a ribbon which had a school name. Once home, I called the school. Each year the 5th grade class studies American History and specifically, the civil war. They take a field trip to Gettysburg in the Spring.....walk picketts charge, do the battlefield tour. They carry native pine from Maine and these ribbons..and find each monument to Maine and the graves of each soldier who fell during the battle....from Maine. The students leave these small memorials on each place. Gave me chills.....some children DO get it because they are shown the importance of these important places.

Visit a national park.....show them Yosemite, Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon. Share the spendors of beautiful Acadia - where the sunlight kisses the east coast for the first time each day - go whalewatcing....or pretty little Shenandoah National Park, or immerse yourself in the history of Williamsburg. Take them to Newport, RI, go sailing and visit Marble House or the Breakers, Boston.....the Consitution...the oldest commissioned ship in the US....Montpieler, Monticello or George Washington's beloved Mount Vernon. Get the idea.......sooooooooo much else to share.

...and I don't buy "my children would never still for something educational". It's our responsibility to expand their thinking. This will make them far more interesting adults.

Flame me if you must.....we are responsible to expand the knowledge and experiences of our children. Hall of Presidents or World Showcase should never be the exclusive resourse for expanding a child's mind. They will never be a substitute for the thrill of seeing these places in person.

I think the original thought was.......sure WDW is ok to visit .... but children should ALSO be exposed to sooooooo much more....because there is sooooooo many more thrilling things to do than just space mountain alone each and every year.

Ok, PS.......for parents who DO this already....BRAVO. Your children will thank you for this as adults.

I dunno, paying ~$95/night for a room at a deluxe resort is plenty of 'perk' for me. ;)

and dining discounts, ap discounts, shopping discounts, golf, spa, watersports, tours, etc!

YEP! and its funny to see that the people getting all riled up about that comment...alot have many many trips to wdw a year so when would you have time to take them to see other stuff?unless you get to vacation all year...my dh gets 12 weeks off a year paid vacation..we use maybe 2 to go to wdw and one of those is WITHOUT the kids..the other times we do other things..THAT is why DVC is no good for us...

I guess people assume that DVC member only go to Disney for vacation? I can't speak for everyone else but that is not the case for my family. We do at least 3 family vacations a year and only one is to WDW. So we expose our children to more than just Disney. I do want to say though that having well "Cultured" children isn't a must. I tend to think that is a "I'm better than you" statement. There are plenty of successful people in this world that aren't or never grew up being "Cultured."

Who said DVC members don't do other things? That's what I don't get. I'm sure there are some that don't. But I do not believe that most DVC members with kids only vacation at Disney. Why do people think one is exclusive of the other? It's not at my house. We do visit Disney most often, but we haven't missed out on other things just because we go to Disney.

And yes, that type of comment is one of the comments I saw earlier that made me see red, as I said in my other post (among others that I thought were much worse).

This thread is really off topic for the Theme Parks board. The DIS has one of the largest DVC discussion boards anywhere on the internet, with several threads devoted to the pros and cons of buying into DVC. So I'm closing this thread here.
