Why Dont you do DVC??

Sorry another question - say we buy 200 points at x resort - but one year we do not go......do points roll over continuously?? Or do they only roll for a one year max?

Say I dont go for 3 years - does 600 points roll over?

You can only bank one year's worth of points forward, then they must be used in the following use year. You can, however, rent them out if you are unable to use them.

Or be REALLY nice and give them to family to use

Here, this might make it understandable. We have a December use year at SSR. If I decide I won't be going to WDW in 2010 I can bank those points to use the following year. So in your case, come 2011, I would have 400 points. Now you must use those 200 points you banked from 2010 in 2011 or you lose them. Don't freak out and think, what if we can't make it down two years in a row, am I out those points? Not if you rent them out to someone. Rent those 200 points out for $10.00 a point and you just made $2000.00. You can pay off your maintenance fees ($868.00 I think) and still have $1100.00 in your pocket or put to next years maintenance fees.

Plus if you bank those 2010 so you have 400 in 2011, you can also borrow your 2012 points too and use 600 points if you want to take family with you. DVC gives you options, not like most timeshares, and DVC is a timeshare don't let them fool you. Hope this helps.

You can bank points one year forward, at which point they must be used (or rented out). It's not automatic, though--you have to initiate the banking.

You can also borrow points from one year in the future.

Funny you should say that - we would have NO PROBLEM getting rid of them with my family......:lmao:

But, I was thinking about when we have kids, like physically, we may have a year or two where we couldn't go.and I was thinking we could bank, roll, whatever and do a big family trip with extended family with the extra points.....and treat everyone. :wizard:

YES!

My mom (who I will claim is the best mom in the entire world) used her DVC points for my 21st birthday to get a beautiful 2 bedroom at SSR and let me invite my friends down that I hadn't seen in two years since my college program ended. It was a giant party/reunion and it was amazing!

That was one of the side effects of DVC ownership for me. All the sudden a lot of our trips have started including guests. I'm about a heartbeat away from asking the lady behind me at checkout if she wants to join us for MNSSHP this year!

Oh I am a big believer that everyone should experience Disney once in their lifetime......so I could totally see that happening.

Just wondering, I know alot of people on here go Every year or even twice and stay at Deluxe Resorts. Why do you just continue to go without buying dvc?

dont get me wrong i am one of those people :rotfl2:

Bought DVC through resale, enjoyed 6 years worth of vacations (stayed in studios, 1 bedrooms, 2 bedrooms & even grand villas), sold DVC before the prices went down, pretty much ended up just paying the dues and of course the fee to the resale company when I sold. Bottom line, I could NOT have stayed paying cash (even using FL & AP discount codes) for what I ended up paying the 6 years of my ownership, the grand villas alone went for over $1,200 a night on the nights I stayed in them. So ownership for a short period of time really paid off in my case. I never intended to own for the entire term of the contract. I knew, I'd buy in, enjoy for a time and then sell.

Do I miss it, sure I do but I now rent points from owners trying to unload some extra points when I want to stay on property. It's a win-win deal :thumbsup2.

PolynesianAlex, if I had $17k lying around, there would be other things that would come before DVC membership.

So can you have your maintenance fees automatically charged to your disney visa on a monthly basis?? Because, personal as it may be, we currently put our fixed bills on our Disney Visa to gain points and pay it off every month.......soo if we also added our maintenance fees on a monthly basis that would just increase the amount of points we earn......not necessarily to pay maintenance fees......but maybe use our points for spending money while at the World......holy crap....and if the room is taken care of, and spending money is taken care of via reward points.....that takes away a lot of our current vacay costs......plus an AP discount....hmmmmm

Okay finance people - my husband is a CPA so everything is very black and white to him........would anyone mind sending me an excel spreadsheet to outline the costs?? Because DH is going to want to see hard numbers on actual savings......and he is the math whiz.....me not so much :sad2:

Sorry I have totally hi-jacked this thread - sorry OP!

Unless something has changed you can only charge it if you pay maintance fees in full for the year. You can have it taken out of your bank account monthly.

Heck we charged our whole purchase and paid it off when the bill came to get the points.

Paid for all the tips on our 7 day cruise for the 4 of us that we got for our incentive.

It's not for everyone but it made great financial sense for us.

We would love to do it, but don't because everytime we do the math, it doesn't work for us. With value resorts and promos, DVC just doesn't make a lot of sense for us.

Furthermore, as much as we love Disney, we don't want to actuallly be on the hook for 40+ yrs for it.

Also, the DVC points double when booking Fri & Sat night stays, thus that would push us into a Sun - Fri trip which is poor use of my vaca time.

Add in the fact that using DVC points outside of the Disney properties is very costly, it just isn't for us.

Renting DVC is something we definitely want to do when we decide to splurge for deluxe accomodations.

You know the whole "buy low, sell high" idea.....so is now a "low" time to buy......???? It seems like there has been a dip in price per point lately? Am I wrong? :confused3 (I am not looking for any "financial" advice - just wondering if there has been a noticeable drop in price per point with the economy....)

Not that I would ever want to sell......:rotfl:

If Value or even Mod are fine with you and you don't need the condo type room then you are right, the math will never work out to make DVC a wise decision. It is for those that want the 1 or 2 bed room condo while staying on Disney property that it becomes a deal.

My suggestion to you, don't ever stay at a Deluxe Villa then, because you will never want to go back to the small rooms :lmao:

JK but it does spoil a person.

I think it just depends how you live. Our apartment is 900 square feet. To us, the rooms at the Grand Floridian are enormous.

There is no such thing as a drop in price per point. Sadly, the only way the cost of DVC goes is up!

On the resale market...yes for some properties. I have seen many SSR contracts going for less than the pre-opening price offered through Disney and HHI and Vero for in the range of $55/pt.

For us the decision was pretty easy. My wife and I have three children, 8, 6, 3. We do not like to stay in the traditional "hotel" type rooms. Those that have kids know a good night sleep is hard to come by when you are sleeping in the same room as three other children. Never mind after a long day in the parks. We want our own room, and the kids to have their own room, and a place where we can all be together and not crammed in a small hotel room.
Looking at what a Disney Deluxe Villa rate is, it didn't take a mathematician to figure out that it will not take long for it to be a savings for our family. Will we grow out of it, maybe, but I can sell. I don't intend to sell, I want to take my grand kids (Lord willing) to WDW and share many wonderful memories with them too. I just paid up front to make sure that I get a good deal in the future.

Bold is mine. I so agree. I love having a seperate living space. Tip-toeing around in a standard hotel room, trying not to wake others, is not my idea of vacation. :thumbsup2

Which is exactly why I need to convince my hubby NOW! :lmao:

In all seriousness we already are planning on doing a tour/meeting with the DVC people on on vacation in 2 months......I am just trying to line up all my questions.....and this thread has made my pen and paper catch fire.....;)

Everyone has been so helpful......

This has been changed for 2011 so that the Friday and Saturday nights are better point wise.
