I've read various estimates that petites account for anywhere from 35-45% of the USA adult female population.
I'm 5' 4 1/2", so barely fall in the petite height range, but regular sizes are way, way out of proportion for me--armholes too big, shoulders too wide, darts too low, waist to crotch too long on pants, etc., etc.
I don't even bother to look at regularly-sized dresses, because most of them would literally be below my ankles and dragging on the floor.
Even regularly-sized T-shirts in a size small are way, way too big for me all over. What do true petites (like 5 feet tall, 100 pounds) do for clothes??
I'm fairly thin (120) which puts me at a 6 petite for most department-store lines, but a 4 petite for the pricier lines and the smaller shops like Ann Taylor. The stores in my area have very, very few items smaller than a six petite, so if I lose a few pounds, or want to wear something other than Macy's Style & Co. line (their 6P fits me perfectly), I have to shop 1-2 hours away. I drag DH to the Millenium Mall Macy's sometimes when we go to Disney because their sizes start at 2P, while our local Macys rarely has anything smaller than a 6P.
Basically I end up with about 5 casual tops and 5 casual pants every season that I wear over and over. This is OK as long as I can wear scrubs to work. I would have loved to have some cute, casual dresses to wear on my little beach vacation, but NOTHING FITS. It's very frustrating, and I think I'm pretty normal-sized. Plus I'm 50, and I would look ridiculous in a lot of styles that are current right now (e.g. baby-doll mini-dresses,etc.). I'm not a fuddy-duddy, but I don't want people to point and laugh at me

because my clothes are too young! Don't even get me started on those issues.
