Why don't people keep what they buy????

My point in this thread is that I really can't believe how worked up people are getting over such a small thing!

EXACTLY! So, if people want to return something then so be it...what do other people care?

So who here has worked in retail?

I have...I checked people out as well as processed returned items as well as restocking whatever item was returned...ALL part of my job...

Well the OP works in returns, which is why she started the thread. She cares, I assume, because she works in returns.

The OP has made sweeping negative generalizations. That is not a sign of caring.

I do sometimes complain internally about the size of the return line. And I keep much much more than half the merchandise I purchase.

Everything that is returned involves an extra transactions and has to be re-stocked/damaged/what not. I don't think there is anything wrong with returning items occasionally. But doing it on a regular basis more than likely just increases the cost of doing business, which is likely passed on to ALL customers.
That is part of my point. If people would not return so much that would cut down on alot of extra work. Sales people could devote more time to helping customers instead of restocking returned merchandise. If you return items every so often, then it is no big deal. But when you get the same people every week returning bags of clothes it becomes a problem. Figure out what you want and buy it. You don't have to buy the whole store just to get a deal and return it the next day. It becomes a waste of time for the customer as well as the store. I sometimes wonder if our store even makes a profit because of the heavy returns we have. I also love when they return it worn, dirty or,broke. They look you in the eye and swear that is how they bought it. People never cease to amaze.

My sil is the absolute worst about buying then returning things...and she has NO excuse. I think she just likes the brief thrill of buying something. She certainly shops enough for 5 or 6 people -- and does NOT have the of income to support this sort of habit!!

Wasn't there a lady on the news a couple of years ago that was banned from a couple of stores because of excessive returns??? Does anyone remember her story? It is that kind of story that I think is what really irritates the OP. The lady in the story would buy tons of stuff almost everyday and then go back the next day and return most or all of it and sometimes even re-purchased things she had just returned!!!

And NO ONE is talking about having to return items purchased for a person that dies before it can be used.

No offense, but it really shouldn't bother you THAT much...

But when you add to all of these people to the ones trying to return a 10 year old tv full of cockroaches (true story, happened to my best friend when she was working at the service desk of a Wal-Mart about 10 years ago) because it wasn't working, well, it makes for a really stressful day.

I'm so happy I don't work in retail anymore. We were discussing how we can actually enjoy the holidays now.

That's true I still think it's completely whacked to buy two shirts just so you don't have to try one on at the store but to each his own. I don't really like the idea of buying things that someone has already had in their home before just to try out...seems creepy.

Ever gone shopping with a 2 yo AND a 3 yo? It's not fun. And trying on the clothes before you buy them??? :rotfl2:

FWIW I worked retail at the Christmas season for two years. I loved it. I so don't get when people complain about holiday shoppers. We always had a blast totally the receipts for the day and seeing how much we sold. Yeah, there are a lot of crabby people out there, but after they leave, you just look at each other, do one of these  and move on. You can't let random crabby strangers ruin your day. I even liked working Black Friday. The day just flew by because we were constantly busy.

You left one out: The person you purchased the items for died.

Happened to me. MIL passed away two days after I purchased her Christmas gifts. Had to return everything. Wondering now what they must have thought at the return desk.

I remember something similar from my days in retail. I worked in a small retailer like Walmart (Big Wheel) and right before Christmas, this woman came to the front desk to pick up a layaway and I was in the register right next to the desk. Next thing you know, she starts sobbing and told us that her daughter had just died in a car accident and she was picking up the layaway for the kids' Christmas. We were all bawling because it was just so sad. :(

I'm another who doesn't like to try on clothes in the store so I just get sizes I hope will fit and if they don't we head back to the store. I also sometimes but things that I "need" only to realize when I get home, that I don't "need" them, so they back. Lots of time I will find items I like better at another store after I already purchased things, or I find the better deal elsewhere so back things go.

A question I would like to ask. Why do people buy so much and then return it? You spend all day shopping. You have to get to the store early. Fight crowds, wait in long checkout lines. Hope you hit the best possible sale. For what? So you can come back the next day and return it all? I get the biggest kick out of people who complain about return lines. They almost always ask," why is the line so long?" I want to say,"If you and everyone else would keep half of what you buy maybe the line would not be so long."We had one lady bring back twenty pairs of pants, twenty shirts and four boxes of shoes. She tells me she got the wrong sizes.I'm just amazed. You don't know the correct size to buy? What a waste of time. Then I love the ones who give you their whole life story as to why they are returning. Honestly, who cares. Return it and move on. Also, why does Christmas bring out the worst in people? I guess working in returns for thirteen years I see people getting worse and worse. I always start off my day in a pleasant mood. When I leave I have to keep saying,"college tuition, college tuition."

If no one was returning, then you wouldn't have a job would you? ;)

Because people might smoke in their house, have pets, have a smelly apartment, etc.

...and people that use the fitting room to try on could have smelly pits, smelly butts, dog hair stuck to them, headlice and the list goes on :teeth:

Where in the world can you shop where they let you try on the underwear????

Why is that so funny? I think there have only been a few rare occasions when I haven't tried on something before I bought it. Then again I don't have children, but I don't plan on having any. I don't think my mom ever brought us kids when she went out shopping. We'd stay home with a babysitter or my dad.

True and that's why I try and pick stuff from the back of the racks or something that looks "fresh out of the box"; however, still the thought of something sitting in a germ infested, pet filled house for who knows how long just doesn't sit easy with me. I'm very anal about things.

That's why I buy underwear wrapped in plastic. Or if I buy boxes from somewhere like AE, you can tell if they are new because how they are folded.

A run though the washing machine should alleviate most people's fears of "germs" on their clothing :teeth:

Victoria's Secret. All they sell is underwear!

Dangit, I'm too stubborn to budge so I'll just say that even washing them can't remove the psychological aspects of it. Just THINKING that the clothes were at home, etc. (Ok I am fishing and totally admit it :rotfl2: )
