Why does this dog have such bad gas??

might gross some of you out.


My yellow lab, 12 years old, obese, lazy etc... has got the worst gas problem I have ever witnessed in a dog. I'm not kidding you, he can clear a house, not just a room.

I was giving him some "gas-x" pills for dogs, blah, they dont work, he smells worse.

His dog food has not changed...other than LESS than he use to get, to try to combat the fact that he weighs 187 lbs....(yes, he larger than ol' yellar.

He can be at one end of the house, you can HEAR him pass gas, and then smell it soon...it's enough to ruin an appetite...we sit around watching TV with our shirts pulled up over our nose/mouth. I was seriously considering getting some masks for us to wear.

Does he ever eat "people" food? Any bite of table food and my Boston Terrier can clear the room. Doesn't matter how bland it seems, he can get gas from eating a piece of bread. Perhaps you should try a new dog food too. Science Diet and Iams have both worked well for our gassy dog. Or call the vet, they could either give you a suggestion for what to try, or sell you prescription food for dogs with stomach problems.

I'd recommend a new premium dog food and more exercise.

are you using a store brand dog food? You may want to consider a gradual switch to a premium brand.

Also, consider adding some FF plain yogurt to his food..that may help combat the gas.

And you may also want to work with your vet and set up a weight loss plan for your pooch...187 lbs is entirely too much weight for a lab.

Oh fat dog does not get any people food...maybe he cleans out the cat dish every few days - but thats dry food.

He's been on Iams dog food for life,

Originally he was on the Iams Lamb & Rice,

then when his weight problem increased, he was switched to Iams Weight Control Lamb & Rice

this was done per vet's recomendation.

He's lost weight..believe it or not. This spring he was actually down to 160...over the summer he stayed about the same, but then as fall came, he went back up. he does not get an excessive amount of food.


He's been on this weight control plan for almost 2 years...his gas just started oh- say 6 months ago....

The dog is active, as active as a overweight dog can be. he is out on his run during the day, and does run around. He runs with us on weekends with our quads, the girls take him for walks etc... he doesnt lead a lifestyle of eating/sleeping.

I wonder if he'd eat yogurt..hmmm

Iams was taken over by Proctor and Gamble and the formula changed...for the worse IMHO

It could be that change that has affected your pooch

Wow, I didn't know the Iams formula changed! We had a problem with gas when we fed our dog Eukanuba, but when we switched to the Iams, the gas subsided (for the most part).

I'm glad I read this thread. I'll have to watch for changes in weight and such with the change in ingredients.

I don't have any answers as to why your dog has gas but since you did bring up this subject I thought I would see if anyone elses dog acts like mine.

She will pass gass and will jump up like a bolt of lightning ran through her and then she will look for it like it was something that attacked her. It is the funniest thing. One day she was sleeping in the recliner and she passed gas, I'm telling you this dog jumped so high and shot out of that chair so fast and then went back to look for her "offender". I've heard of being afraid of your own shadow but my dog is afraid of her own gassiness.

yep, remember back in the days when Iams could only be found at places like Petco, Pet Supermarket, and PetsMart? And then it was available at Wal-Mart and grocery stores. That happened after Iams was taken over by P&G.

It's a shame too....I used to feel my dogs and cats Iams....after the formula switch my dogs became gassier and the cats flat our refused to eat it...not good.

When I was growing up our dog got gassy as she aged. She lived until 15 and the last few years were pretty bad. We just assumed it was an old age thing.

Thanks for the laugh Princess Michelle, it reminds me of my little pooch. I have a small yorkie-minpin mix who is supposed to weigh in at 8 to 10 pounds. This little porker weighs more like 12 to 13. He is so comical. When he gets gassy it is enough to gag an elephant. And he too, will jump like he has been shot, turn around as if to see if it is following him and then start to whimper and cry. He thinks he has done a bad thing. It is so funny to watch him that we tend to forget the smell. But the worst time for him to have a problem is at night when he is in the bed sleeping with us and underneath the covers.
I really cannot belive that adult people are discussing this delicate matter, and that I am responding to this post, but it really is good for a laugh.

I've fed my dog Iams for ever and she doesn't have a problem at all unless she gets into any food that isn't hers. And she can clean out a room too. She's a lab mix too.

I'll call the vet's tomorrow- he was there about a month ago for his nails, and she asked what he was eating...she didnt say anything bad about iams.
