I think they (I know I would if I were in charge) stagger the closing times of the parks so they don't all empty of guests at the same time and clog the roads as well as overwhelming the transportation systems.
All the parks except animal kingdom have nightime events which require darkness. Epcot just about always closes at 9 or 9:30. Magic kingdom since wishes usually does no close earlier than 9pm except for special events. Before wishes the park closed in off season as early as 7pm when they were not doing fireworks.
So this leaves MGM which in the off season closes as soon as they can do fantasmic which can be as early as 7pm. As darkness comes later the park will be open later.
I think the p;ark hours are set according to season/crowds. When you see an early closing time rejoice; crowds will be more manageable and you will get more done in less time -then have time to dash off to Epcot for Illuminations, enjoy a swim, visit DTD, or whatever else floats you boat
I had read that you can easily do MGM in a day, maybe they have figured out that most people don't need extended hours. I really don't know why either.
