Why does it feel like I made a mistake booking SSR?

You're right. It could be because they look and feel like apartment complexes, especially Saratoga. Maybe it's a little too "home away from home" for some.

We loved SSR-stayed there because we booked a last minute DVC vacation and it was so much fun. The pools were nice, The Paddock Pool was perfect for little kids. The grounds are lovely just to walk. Really like the food court...we were pleasantly surprised and going back for a large family vacation in 2018.

It's nowhere near as nice as the spa at the Grand but the employees were friendlier.

I found this to be true for our entire stay in 2014. The resort itself was ... meh, okay, maybe even good in some ways, and I did enjoy the boat to (then) Downtown Disney.

But I found the castmembers were terrific. Hardworking, eager, friendly; it's almost like they knew their resort might not be one of the shining stars, but that they were going to find a way to make it shine anyway through sheer force of helpfulness.

My wife and I still talk about our server Tobi at The Turf Club Bar & Grill: she took such close and careful care of us, we felt like royalty. (And the meal was great, actually. Try the Grilled Romaine Salad or the Root Beer Pork Chop!)

We really love SSR and actually like many of the things that people complain about--like how spread out it is! We enjoy having all those areas for walking and the ability to walk to both DS and OKW. We've stayed at both Paddock and the Springs and the buses were just fine. Since there's just the two of us (me and DH), having just one bed in the room is really great. And the place is very pretty, with many lakes and a lot of aquatic birds.
