Why does Donald wear a crown?

DD got a picture with Donald at DCA. He was wearing a red crown and a blue jersey with a big yellow D on it. DD wanted to know to know why but his handler didn’t know. Can someone explain why?

Ok so I did a little research and it's called a Whoopee cap and they were popular in the 30's-40's. So seems like it's his period costume.

BVS and the characters there are themed to L.A. in the 20's and 30's, the period when Walt arrived in California. That's why the characters are dressed differently (their costumes on BVS are "period") than they are in DL. When you return in October, the characters will be dressed differently for Halloween -- those costumes are super cute!
