why do you homeschool?

Lets not forget about what role the slave labor, denial of the ability to become literate, and so many other acts of opression played in the developement of this great nation we live in.Home schooling must have begun long ago when PEOPLE were whipped, and even killed for WANTING to learn to read,no less get an education!:sad1: I digress......So many famous people with such little heart and compassion for fellow human beings...and we are called CIVILIZED? I digress... Teach your children well-Neil Young...........

PP was belittling the home school education that Martha Washington received.
Her education consisted of far more than French and dancing, as I explained.

What does slavery have anything to do with our discussion of home schooling,
except that it be taught as a part of our nation's and our world's history? :confused3

As other PP have mentioned, if you are diametrically opposed to HS, why are you here? :sad2:
OP asked for people to share their personal experiences and reasons for home schooling their children.
I can only guess that the rest of these posters are simply argumentative people with nothing better to do... pirate:

Each person gets to make their own choices in this life, how about we start respecting the choices of others instead of bashing them? :flower3:

They are here because they are bored and are looking for an argument. If you do not agree with the topic I am sure you can find a topic you are better suited for. Your ignorant post are not going to sway my hsing decision. God Bless:)

This is why most homeschoolers are afraid to respond to baiting posts such as these. Attacks, instead of curiousity abounds.
We are homeschooling. We dabbled in the ps when I felt overwhelmed. It did not work for my children. One point I see made repeatedly is the fact of isolation. In school, my children were put in a room with kids the same age, in an area where all are from the same blue-collar, christian background. Out of school, my hs kids spend time with kids with numerous religious and financial backgrounds. The isolation and lack of exposure to other viewpoints was much more severe in school then out of it.
The other simple answer is, that they begged to come home. School was a waste of their time, simply. When they were in school, they were used as tutors for the lower performers, because they could already pass the tests. Rather than being challenged, they needed to bring books to school daily , since they had tons of spare time to read. I just thought that at that point, they may as well come back home.
I adore teachers. They do so much, with so very little. In fact, 6 homeschool parents I know are teachers. They also did not want their children in ps, even though they believe in ps. It is not all or nothing.

Slavery made it necessary for the oppressed to get educated however they could;more than likely"at home",wherever that may have been, out from under the watchful eye of their oppressor. Now how can you get more home schooled than that? Also, there was a time when certain segments of the population were not allowed in"public"schools; So where do you think some of those people got educated...AT HOME,until facilities were made for educational purposes,ie the"school house".So yes, there is definately a connection, maybe just one you just don't care to see.;) As for posting on this subject,I plead the 5th,Amendment that is.Do they have Debate Club in home school?Being able to"argue" one's point effectively is a highly sought after skill in the world today.

Exactly. Listing names of people who home schooled without regard the context in which they were home schooled is meaningless. For example - Booker T Washington could not attend school as there were no schools that took blacks in his area at the time. When he turned 16 he had enough money to enroll in Hampton Institute - a school - when he completed the first part of his formal education. (He also went to seminary after graduating.) Sandra Day O'Connor lived with her grandmother in El Paso and attended a variety of public and private schools before graduating for Austin High School. Washington Carver was taught to read and write by his former owners. He then walked to a nearby town where he heard there was a school for blacks. He eventually graduated from public school. So you may want to actually fact check your list before distributing it as fact.

Anyway, like I have said before, if you want to home school go for it. But for every success story think about how many failures there are. Are public schools the be all and end all of education, no, but schools are also charged with doing things that they were never designed to do. Even though we just started preschool with my two I am active in ensuring they are learning to their full potential and am not afraid to challenge the school to do better if they need it.

Everytime someone points out that the public schools fail at least a third of their students people have to try to put the blame elsewhere. If they can't do what they are charged with then it is still failure. Just as the homeschoolers. If they don't do as charged they too are failures.

Homeschoolers test higher and are accepted to top tier schools than public. We will see if those stats hold as the movement grows. Mine are doing well and have been accepted into their choice schools. Frankly that is all that matters to me.
