Why do students often type TWO spaces after a period - POLL added

I was taught two spaces after a period, one space after a comma.

That's how I learned it as well.

I voted for 2, but...when I am sending a txt message I type 1. Its how I was taught in highschool. I think when I am on a message board though I type only 1. I was wondering if they still teach this in school but I guess I have my answer now. I do know when I was doing a resume and a cover letter for a friend the other day I did it as I was taught with two spaces after a period and one after a comma.

I was taught two spaces, but my students come back from keyboarding using only one.

However, I did have the one student who put three spaces in between EVERYTHING. Don't know where she learned that.
