Why do some towns have TOT on days other than Halloween?

My town does it too and I can't stand it. The municipality has never bothered to explain itself so I don't know why.

I love it. Ours is always on the Thursday before. Friday night is football night no one would be home to give out candy. Everyone is at the game. Saturday is bad with all the crazy people out drinking and having adult parties. It works wonderful! Plus today our weather was VERY VERY crappy to say the least. Thursday night was beautiful! No jackets under costumes or anything! We went Trick or Treating on Thursday, Friday was school parade and party, Today we went to a Halloween party at the firehouse. its not a one day event its 3-4 days around me!

Here where we are, near Toms River, NJ, they usually have a big parade on Halloween day and TOT the day before in the town and surrounding towns.
When Halloween falls on the weekend however they don't move it so we had TOT today and it will be on Sunday next year.

Its odd to me too.

Our town always does it on Halloween. we have the kids parade and halloween party the weekend before halloween, so there are several events here in town related to halloween before trick or treating.

one year the new police chief decided to do it on a different day, and it caused an uproar, so now its on the 31st always.

we usually check surrounding towns though and go to different towns on the different days if they have trick or treating on days other than the 31st.

one town had it on november 1 last year!!! so my kids went 2 times!

Especially when Halloween falls on the perfect night of the week-Saturday!

When I lived in Greenville, SC (home of Bob Jones University and smack dab in the middle of the bible belt) some subdivisions moved their Trick or Treating from Sunday to Saturday so it wouldn't be celebrated on the Lord's day. Most of the city didn't buckle under and had it on Sunday night.

Yes some kids around here go to different towns on different days, once is enough for us too. The 3 of mine that went out brought home enough candy for a few months... I couldn't imagine having double that in my house!

We live in the South so ours was moved to Thursday because of football. I'm really glad they did because the weather was much better then. It is also moved to another day if it falls on a Sunday. I'm all for moving it for both of those reasons.

When we were in Iowa, our town and many others in the area did TOT on the 30th--Beggars night. The kids told jokes to get their candy. It was fun! The reason they did this was that it left the 31st for the parties and the kids were not out running around and having to worry about cars, etc. More people were home to hand out candy and it cut down on the pranks on Halloween night.

PA here too and we do it on Thursdays as well.

I hate it! It's not so bad that it's Thursday, but they do it from 4 to 6, which sucks for working parents.

We used to live in Canton, OH. It was always the Sunday before Halloween, from 3 to 5 in the afternoon, and it stunk. They said it was a safety issue. I wouldn't want myself or my children to be walking around there after dark anyway.

Our town in KY has an ordinance stating that trick or treat must be on Halloween, regardless of what day of the week the holiday falls upon. The time is perfect, from 6 to 8. We have 1 hour of daylight, then 1 hour of dark.

We had over 350 trick or treaters last night and ran out of candy 30 minutes early.

My hometown in NH has always done it on October 30th. There was no set time but generally 6-8pm is standard. My parents still live there and Oct 30th is my mom's birthday. This year since it was a Friday we went to visit for mom's birthday and trick or treating (they live 1.5 hours away). Saturday we trick or treated at home again no standard time but 6-8pm seems standard. It is always done on the 30th in my hometown and the 31st where I live regardless of day of week, football etc. Adult halloween parties generally start after 8pm so it doesn't interfere. School used to do a Halloween party on a Sunday before Halloween or Halloween weekend depending on what day Halloween occured but due to economy not done this year (wasn't sponsored by school just borrowed space).

My kids trick or treat for fun and we used to give at least 90% of the candy away. Dh used to take it to work for all the employees to share many of which don't have the right age kids for trick or treating. This year dh is out of work but we will probably give most of it to my sil's sister for work. For my kids it is fun to be out and the candy isn't that important by Nov 2nd.

I find it odd also and wouldn't like it.
We have always had it on Halloween every where I have lived.
The town has a parade on the Sat before and has business ToT then, unless it is on a Sat, then it is on that day.
But everything else is on the actual day of Halloween.

Our town has never had it on Halloween, it's always been the Thursday before. If Halloween falls on a Thursday, ToT will be on Thursday the 24th.

I don't know why, I moved here when DH & I got married and he said it's always been that way.

The area I live in celebrates it on the 31st, no matter which day it falls. I like it that way.
