Why do some people think they are above rules!

This happened to me at the LAX airport while waiting in line for the bathroom.

A gorgeous 20something woman cut right in front of me and my girls and it was obvious there was a long line. I will say something and I did. I said you do know that we're waiting in line, right?, and you just cut in front of us. Problem solved.

It has happened at retail stores like WM, too, and I make sure to speak up.. always. I do it because the rude one's think that they can get away with it, but not with me. ;)

Lyn, may I ask what store it was? I would have taken up the issue with management, but then again I do know that local people are generally more relaxed and live more with the "aloha spirit" so I can see how they handled it like they did.

How did somebody "steal" "your" rotisserie chicken? Had you placed a specific order? Did you prepay for the chicken, and then they didn't have any to give you? At our stores, things like precooked chicken are first come, first served, and actually, self serve items.

I remember one day, somebody "stole" the sushi I wanted for lunch, so I needed to order something else. Another time, like you, I wanted to get a rotisserie chicken to serve guests for lunch. By the time I finished purchasing the rest of my groceries, there were no chickens left. So I had to resort to "plan B", which was to stop at a different store. If there had been none there, either, I would have gone to Boston Market, which is actually in the same parking lot as the grocery where I was shopping. I have no ill will to those who happen to buy the last of a particular item that I thought I might want to purchase. I usually pick up something else instead.

I still got one.

It was "stolen" b/c the lady knew the rules of the deli and my number was ahead of hers. It is a fairly large deli and I followed procedures. When I complained she told me I had left and she stayed and it was hers. Not only did I NOT leave (I went over to the area of the numbers to be sure I heard my number in the same vicinity)--the Deli employee broke the policy by not going to get the next number which was my number.

Believe me--at that moment, had it been the LAST rotisserie, I would have gotten a manager involved. I had my number waiting patiently for the deli to service all those getting their deli meats--and they just have one station for numbers to service those getting lunchmeat, subs, and chickens. I do not have the luxury of a Boston Market in my area. And while you find it easy to say oh well--at that moment with a very hungry 5yo and 3yo..it ain't so easy. And before I get flamed for this--it is a rarity for me to go (like NEVER) at this time to the store for dinner. But I did what I was directed to do and the lady was a witch about it.

Basically--she cut in line and the deli employee enabled it.

Yep, I took the chicken stalker and stealing the chicken as tongue in cheek...she was complaining more about the fact the woman cut the line.

::yes:: Precisely! Her number was behind mine.

(I got a chicken b/c there happened to be another in the back of the case that I did not see).

I hate the entitlemnet mentality. I see it all the time...at home, at work, at the grocery store...everywhere.
I have gotten to the point where I will confront someone if they are trying to cut line. And the worst part is, most of te time, if you were really in a big hurry and you asked me nicely, I'd probably let you go ahead of me.

I am with you! In my younger (and more willing to be stepped on days), I probably wouldn't have said anything, I would have just fumed on the inside. I have NO problem telling someone where the end of the line is, in a nice way. Now if my DH is there, he isn't so nice about it. Sometimes I'm grateful he's there ;)

I would probably still not bear ill will toward a person who had cut in front of me at the deli. On the other hand, I would try not to go to the grocery or deli at a time that I know I would wait an excessively long time. Our area is still so sparsely populated that numbers are not given at the deli or bakery or meat case, so, unless I am uncharacteristically pushy, somebody else is almost certain to push in front of me. Yes, people have bought the last of a particular item right from under my nose, but, I usually have an alternative plan. I usually go to the grocery on late Sunday afternoon, because the weekly specials are in the Sunday paper. That is actually the most crowded time, but, it is the time I have available to shop. If a particular item is sold out, I decide whether I want to come back later in the week, or if I want to do without. Usually, I do without and improvise something else.

Most of the people around here are really pretty nice. Last time I went to the store (Target), the lane next to mine opened up while I was waiting. The person waiting next to me saw this, and allowed me to go first into the newly opened lane. Same thing happens at the grocery I go to. I probably would have more hurt feelings if people were as pushy around here as where you people are describing.

I dont know if I'm lucky or people are just more polite here because this almost never happens to me. Practically the only place I get cut in front of is WDW! There are a lot of other stupid people tricks though! :rotfl:

Tourists.....At our SafeWay they march through it like they own the place and dont care if they ram their carts into your leg or into your cart.

See, if you were vegetarian you wouldn't have this problem with chickens! ;) :teeth:

That's because it feels like familiar territory to them, they mentally haven't left the mainland. You have to admit it's a little fun to watch them pile up the cart and then go into shock over the price when everything is rung up. :rotfl:

I think that is what also really bothered me, is that they helped her right away. Maybe they wanted to get rid of her, but it wasn't fair to all the people in line.

Yah, it is a sad situation. I've run into a lot of rude people here recently, and I don't think they live here. People that live here are for the most part, polite by nature. It is a small place, and when you treat people badly it can come back to haunt you very quickly. Certainly making a scene like that in a grocery store is not something that you would typically see from a local.

I went into a small local jeweler's shop to have a watch band adjusted. A job that would take 5 minutes. When I entered the store there was someone being waited on. No problem, I told the clerk what I was there for. I knew I would be waited on next. Then a woman walks in to pick something up.They waited on her before me. I wasn't thrilled, but I figure ok this will only take a minute she'll pay and then they'll wait on me. Well, this took much longer than I ever thought as she had questions and needed to try the item on again. So now I'm a liitle irrated, but whatever. She finished soon enough and is gathering up to leave. THEN another woman walks into the shop. Clerk comes to take care of me when this woman waves her checkbook in the air and states "I'm in a hurry, I have company coming to the house!" The clerk goes to wait on her!!! I was SO ANGRY! I just couldn't hold it in any longer. I said, "It seems if I had waved my checkbook in the air I would have been waited on much sooner!!!" At this point the jeweler (owner) walks in from the back room to see what's going on. The clerk still waited on check book woman. I had him give me back my watch. I told him that I would NEVER do business there ever again!!

Maybe your school should get one of those orange cones and put that out on the drive where the first car in line should stop and tell the parents that any car that parks in front of this cone will need to immediately move to the back of the line. No more butting in front of the first car in.

We have talked about having a sign posted that the carpool line starts here but that would be good for now. I will tell the office the suggestion. :) They have cones dividing the street from the little circle because so many people go to the left side & end up meeting up with cars going the right way head on. ARG! :( There should be enough room for the cars to pass on the right if the first car doesn't pull up too far. Oh, there is also a parking lot where you can park & get you kid. I tend to park there & avoid the line since I have to check in at the office for any PTO business that may have come in that day.

Thank you for the lecture.

My original post was in jest.

No need to flame me. Ordinarily I am *responsible* with my shopping habits. However, circumstances lent themselves to that particular moment and I was justified to go into a grocery store during operating hours to get food to feed my family regardless of the time of day. Just b/c it is a busy hour does not give someone an excuse to--as the OP put it--"think they are above the rules" and then be rude while they are doing it. I didn't pull an "Oprah" moment and I needn't justify why I had to be in the store *at that moment*.

I did have a back up plan if you must know--but the rudeness of the woman put it over the top. She made no apology for her rudeness. "Finders keepers" was definitely in the tone of her voice.

I'm glad that *some* got the humor in the story as I presented it.

ETA: I didn't have ill will toward the woman. I was upset that the store that I have shopped at for almost 8 years with a very clear and very strict "gotta get a number" policy opted to at that one moment arbitrarily decide to just do their own thing. You make it sound as though I was hoping she'd choke on her chicken or something.

OH OH OH! I just remembered one that really bothered me. The guy almost got lynched too by all of us...anyhow, the tunnel in the castle at MK was opened only on one side and several of us were patiently waiting our chance to take pictures of the mosaics on the wall. People pass thru there, just wait. Well, there was a break & we were all getting ready to take a shot when a couple rushed past us. The guy took a picture & his wife stood with a hand on her hip watching him RIGHT IN FRONT OF ALL OF US! :crowded: I said excuse me but would you mind standing to the side, we have been waiting for 10 minutes to take a picture. The guy just looked at us & said he had been waiting 10 minutes too. I told him that was unlikely since he had just come in but his wife was not taking a picture. She was blocking the rest of us & if she would kindly move over then everyone could get their shot & move on. She moved but just when he was going to take his picture someone walked in front of him. :)

I have seen many of these people in my retail years. My store had 4 registers and 1 line. When the cashier was ready they would call for the next in line. Many times there would be a line maybe 7 people long and someone would stand behind the person I was ringing up so I couldn't see them. When I finally saw them I would politely ask them to please stand on the line because there is only 1. About 50% of the time they were nice, sorry and they would easily move. The other 50% they were very rude and would yell at me that they waited there for awhile and do not want to wait anymore. Whatever. I was a fast cashier, the most they were standing there was about 5 minutes. At that point I had already asked nicely, I let the customers battle it out. And sometimes there were battles! Usually the next in line would let them go because they were in no rush. Other times there would be screaming matches and the cutter would want me to sympathize with them! What! You just cut the line, I am not going to sympathize with you because the next in line yelled at you! This happened a lot during the holidays when the line would literally wrap around the store. The cutter also would not be offered free gifts, they didn't deserve a prize for being rude. Now does everyone see why I gave up being a cashier to work the early mornings?

When this happens to me at a store I usually don't say anything because I feel the cutter must have such a life that they feel the need to be rude. I have no patience for rude people.
