Why do some people feel the need to be nasty?

Patti, there is one particular poster here (who's on his third or fourth post-banning username) who seems to enjoy more than anything to stir the pot or pick at women and their experiences/opinions.

He (and there are others like him) reminds me of the loser in high school who'd try to be provocative just for a bit of attention--whether it be positive or negative, but now they can do it anonymously behind a computer screen. Such behavior tends to come across more as a pathetic attempt to be noticed rather than anything else.
I think I know who ;)

I also think that the Internet, being an anonymous venue, lends itself to more nastiness.

Most of the folks who post nasty, insulting or mean-spirited things wouldn't have the "guts" to say the same thing to someone's face.

Really, those type of folks should be pitied. Kind of sad not to have a backbone or the courage of your convictions, but instead to have to hide behind anonymity.

Here's a link to one from last summer.

Good Lord. Looks like the disaster started on pg. 48

Okay, when I said I've been guilty of throwing in my 2 cents its always been when a debate has been established or when one of my posts has been attacked, but geeeeeez! What is it with people?! Things are fine and dandy and a lot of fun on that thread until.........WHAM! Look who shows up to break up the party :confused3

I can't believe there is another it's everybody else thread. :sad2:

There are very few people here, if any, who are totally innocent. I can think one person in particular who plays all nice but never misses an opportunity to take shots at the people he feels shouldn't be here.

Very few if any.

Thought this needed to be bumped and read again.

It is the reason to use the ignore feature, for sure. I rarely ever use it but sometimes that wet blanket becomes too much. Who needs it? DISing is for fun and learning about others thoughts on different topics. Not all have to be supportive and full of pixie dust but they should be respectful. "Nasty" isn't necessary!!

I don't think that anyone is saying that any particular person is innocent all the time. I know that I'm not, but in general, I try to be respectful and if I do find out that I've hurt someones feelings, I am truly sorry (with one real exception, that I can recently think of and that person seemed to have a chip on her shoulder).

Again, I don't mind debating and discussing, but I'm not into nastiness and exclusion.

Are you kidding?

What a great example of how we can all look at a thread and view it very differently.

You saw 47 pages of fun. I saw 47 pages of HATE based on race religion, sexual orinitaion, and political views. Not my idea of fun.

However, it was nice to get a bit of insight into how some of the posters here think/feel. :thumbsup2

A good rule of thumb is (across the Internet -- not just here on the DIS), with minor exception, the longer a thread gets, the less informative, useful and enjoyable it becomes. I typically unsubscribe from threads mid-way through Page 4. :thumbsup2

Exactly. I think a lot of people nodding their head at the OP don't realize how many people see things the opposite way. Many of the people finding it necessary to point out how nasty others are likely have somebody out there thinking the same of them. In fact the act of doing so is not exactly nice.

I remember that thread. That was really bad.

I always think of Thumper: "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." And as I mentioned on another thread, I've learned to write it, read it, and use the back button! I won't say I'm perfect, but I've also learned to just think it, not post it.

I have to admit that I didn't read all 47 pages. Actually, in all honesty I read very few posts for the sake of time. I didn't read anything in regard to race, sexual orientation, or religion. But, again I didn't read it all. What I saw was a young woman expressing her views on how SAHM are viewed and treated and then out of now where there was an attack that ended up in a debate and spiral downhill. I'm still not going to go back and read it all b/c I just don't have the time for that kind of crap :confused3

What's surprising to me is how people can change over time in the types of things they post and the tone they use.

I usually make note of the 'nasty' posters and ignore most of the threads they start and skim over their responses in other's posts.

There is one woman who I put on my 'mental ignore' list years ago because she was always being ugly, especially to a couple of particular DIS'ers, but to lots of other people too. But over time I'd acidently read one or two of her posts when I didn't check who the OP was or I didn't notice her name while skimming down the thread. I noticed that I was rarely reading ugly stuff by her. I started reading her threads again (because she really is pretty funny and makes good sense a lot of the time, it was just her ugliness I couldn't handle) and she's actually become one of the DISers whose threads I seek out to read.

That whole experience made me realize that often we are only seeing one facet of a person, even when they are long time posters. It also made me wonder how I come across to others.

Keli, I almost wish that there was a way that people could start a thread asking what others think of them and then people could post anonymously. I suppose a poll could sort of do that, but I'd have to be smart enough to do a poll (yeah, right).

Of course that would turn nasty and wouldn't really get the desired results, but I have wondered what people think of me, but maybe it's better that I don't know. :rotfl2: I know that I have friends and know that probably most people don't know who I am, so I should leave it at that. :teeth:

True that we do see one side of posters and sometimes we get an image in our heads and it's tough to break that image. The good thing about my very poor memory is that I don't tend to hold grudges since I usually forget when someone has done something to make me mad, unless it's really something that's pissed me off. :lmao:

I think sometimes people are just having a bad day - or a bad week - and they don't think before they hit the "submit" button.. I know I've had times when I was very stressed out and probably came across as a real witch.. When I'm aware of it, I make the effort to apologize - or deal with it via a PM..

However, there are some people who are argumentative just for the sake of being argumentative.. Doesn't matter what you say, they're going to say the opposite..

And then there are some who are just plain mean.. They'll show up on a thread that they have no interest in at all just to say something nasty - or stir the pot..

The ones that really kill me though are those who use an "alias" - or come back under another user name.. If you've been on these boards long enough, you can spot them a mile away - yet they "think" they're pulling one over on the other posters.. :rotfl:

The DIS is definitely not the same place that it was when I first joined, but I still enjoy it and the majority of the posters.. :thumbsup2

While I'm trying to take in everything that's been said, and make sense of it, I take offense at the idea that by asking why others are being unnecessarily nasty, that I, myself am the nasty one.

I don't think, and I might have to really do a good long search to be sure, but I don't THINK, I've ever been mean to anyone on these boards. Ever. I always try to be respectful and kind, and hopefully have a sense of humor too.

So, if I'm the mean one, then I really am confused. :confused3
