Why do some DVC members think they can get extra perks which are not offered?

Small world -- my grandfather was one of the construction workers who built the old barn and was paid in Maple Leafs stock shares. Apparently one can't feed a family during the Depression with such pieces of paper and they were quickly sold to raise some cash for food.

To the OP, are you an owner? if not is your venom maybe tinged with a little jealousy? I see you have a possible future DVC as your signature, if the resort comes to fruition is this aspirational for you or merely a pipedream of wishfull thinking like the guy sat in economy class. Who may not like it but given the chance would happily trade places. Remember capitalism and equality do not go hand in hand even in a themepark.

For the record my family & I are not DVC owners since it's only myself, Mom & Dad who travel to WDW, so we would not need a 2 bedroom or something which some DVC family members with 3 or 4 kids might need, however that is not the point of the thread.

I never said at all I was jealious & if you look at the 1st post I said I never said it's not fair DVC members can pool hop & how they have all the things regular WDW guests have.

As for my signature I only have it because the Contemporary happens to be my favorite WDW Resort, so it's none of your business if I use it or not.

We DVCers pay for having a few extra perks like pool hopping! it's a benefit of being a member! So join the club! but don't be an elitist! Folks, this thread has gotten way.... off topic as to whether (and why) some DVCers have a sort of entitlement mentality, and remember that personal attacks are not allowed.

Personally, I think a feeling of entitlement is something that some people just "have" or are raised with and old habits are hard to break.

I totally agree. Buying DVC (or traveling to Disney) does not magically make everyone kind and generous. The people that were selfish, obnoxious, and rude BEFORE entering the magic kingdom, are still going to be selfish, obnoxious, and rude. If you are talking about pushy people trying to scam a system and demand concessions or things not offered - that sort of behavior is, sadly, all over the place. Regular boards are full of people trying to find ways to scam the system or bend the rules to get something they did not pay for.

I've found the DVC boards to actually be pretty free of this sort of "gimmie" attitude, usually, when a new perk is discussed (like adding free internet access), it is discussed in terms of "Why can't our member dues pay for this?"

Remember, DVC owners have invested in property at Disney, and we belong to an association that allows us to attend meetings and, theoretically, vote on how our membership annual dues are being spent and how the property is managed. Therefore, there is a responsibility for members to discuss things that they would like to see DVC offer members in the future (like WiFi). Interestingly, if you stay on the boards, you will see just as much conversation about "perks" and "freebies" that members (or a porton of members) think should be discontinued - again, because of the potential impact on annual dues. Earlier this year, DVc sent members a canvas art print as a "free" gift - and for every member that was delighted, there was a member concerned about the cost of such a massive mailing.

Also, if you hear members talk about "perks" they recieve, remember that a large percentage of DVC ownders are AP passholders. It's very likely that the "extra" perks they claim they have are valid, because they also hold an annual pass.

No question at partly what I was getting at. Those that are not upstanding people occur in every group, it's definitely not just DVC members. But a system like DVC tends to bring out those qualities it seems.

It’s to bad Disney doesn’t know the meaning of “loyalty” or “long term commitment”. I went to the trouble of planning my family vacations for the next 40 years at a Disney location somewhere in the world. They know they can count on me to spend my hard earned $$ without them having to spend one dime of their advertising or marketing budget. Would it kill them to provide me as committed Disney vacationers for the next 40 years free park entrance, a dinner or something for my loyalty…….just my opinion

I am sure some DVC members feel that way and have that entitlement mentality - but I am also positive there are many more (the majority) that do not.

It is not a DVC thing however - how many guests staying at non dvc resorts feel that entitlement mentality "i am paying so much for this vacation disney should do this for me"?

It is more of an individual issue than a DVC issue.

Personally I am just thankful for any all all perks we do get.

Sorry bud, but you do get a flame on this one. You are attacking DVC members by claiming they do something. But, of course, you offer no proof, no example, nothing. Just a generic slur on DVC members.

If you are upset with something specific somebody said, talk about it. But making a generic attack on DVC members in a DVC forum when you aren't a DVC member... not cool.

I wish this was a genric post but my persona expereinces have been HEARING and SEEING DVC members do the following:

1. Announce LOUDLY to CM that "I PAID FOR PART OF THIS PARK" and therfore the JERK thought that he should NOT have to stand in line but be given a Front of the line at a Disney Ride (Wearing DVC merchandise and pointing to the hat while screming "I PAID FOR PART OF THIS PARK" gave me the clue he was DVC) The "I paid THOUSANDS" statement I have heard numerous times when the guest is being unreasonable.

2. Watch a DVC member thereaten to beat up a CM because "I reserved 11 months ago and TOLD you I wanted Villa XYZ (at OKW)" Followed by lots of "DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I SPEND AT DISNEY?" (No, and I don't care!) Security and local police escorted the bully from the property. The manager pulled his wife aside and said that DVC would be contacting them the next day.

3 I read on here. Enough said. (I feel sorry for some CMs based on the "complaints' here. Failure to say "Welcome Home" appears to be one of the 7 deadly sins LOL!)

Maybe other guest do feel entitled but DVC members and AP holders tend to be the guests that CMs have LOTS of horror stories about. As a result, I don't wear either DVC or AP pins or clothing. I don't want to be tarred by the same brush!

Yeah but I hear non DVC members say junk too. My favorite was the lady who cut in the front of the line at the Gingerbread House at Grand Floridian when we were ordering saying "I'm in concierge".

Some people are jerks, have a sense of entitlement and are going to proclaim it. It doen't matter if they are in DVC or in 4H - if they think they deserve something then you will hear about it.

Personally I think these are the same people who tell the folks at the DMV "my taxes pay your salary!" when they are pissed off.

Tony and the OP make a good point (not about BCV ) but about a small group of DVCers. There have, over the years, been numerous posts ion the DIS from a few DVCers that seem to "want it all." Surely you remember the threads wanting all the FL resident perks because we "own property" in FL, never mind that we aren't actually residents. I remember the threads basically demanding FL ticket rates (I'm still very happy to have the current AP discount) and the right to buy the DDE simply by virtue of being DVC members. There were also the thread stating that because we "spent so much money" on DVC that they OWE us the free dining when it is offered.

There is that minority of people that wouldn't be satisfied even if Disney gave us lifetime park passes and free food for every visit.

To the OP, no business can satisfy all the people all of the time, the same is true for cash customers, FL locals, offsite guests, and DVC members. Just don't paint the vast majority of satisfied owners with the same brush as that vocal minority.

I totally agree with Chuck's post. We aren't owed anymore than what was promised in the POS. You know what, we receive more actually and for those extras I'm truly thankful.

Let me try to help the OP without risking my own butt.

Selling DVC as a home away from home and then using the pitch "Own a piece of the magic" gives us a sense of ownership. That sense of ownership makes us care a little more about WDW and DVC than most CRO guests. I hope the caring and suggestions made by DVC owners are not percieved as an entitlement thing. That entitlement thing is there but only in the vast minority of owners.

I can tell you that we own other timeshares, not Disney related. We get nothing, nada, zilch for our ownership except vactions at a quality resort. No special parties, no member gathers, no special gifts, not even discounts to the local park (unless we want to attend a 90 minute"owners update").

Probably for the same reason a lot of NON-DVC members, who have either booked through CRO or have rented points from an owner, think that THEY are entitled to all the perks of a DVC member...

Calm down everybody. The original post was very vague and all people did was express an opinion. There were very few that felt entitled; most expressed the opinion, to ask; maybe the answer is yes, maybe the answer is no. How many times have you done without, and later found out, that that was indeed included or available. Chill pill anyone? And, of course, I offer this in the lightest sense of opinion.

My cousin is a CM and when she picked me up at the airport a couple weeks ago, she had another CM friend with her. He asked me, "Oh, I heard that you own DVC, do you like it?"

After I told him I did, I also told him, "Yep, I own DVC AND I am buying an annual pass this month. I am your worst nightmare!!!"
