Why do people leave shopping carts in the parking lot?

After I read it I didn't like the way it flowed so I just took it out. Believe me, you are not alone in that sentiment at all!

LOL I liked the original one better..

Snowflakes from the Dis returning a cart??? are you kidding? They would melt;)

Sorry, but this law isn't targetting taking 30 seconds to put your cart back. Nice try though. That is why you park near the cart corral so you aren't leaving the kids for an extended period of time.

And I agree that if it takes you longer than 30 seconds to put your cart back and it causes you immense pain, it's time to find another plan. Grocery delivery perhaps.

yes, actually, it is.

yes, actually, it is. it is always illegal.

Do you REALLY think the police are going to ticket you for leaving your kids in the car for 10 seconds to return a cart. If they are patrolling the grocery store parking lots to watch for this that explains part of why California is in such dire financial troubles.

i think people love their children enough to never put them in a situation in which they might come to harm, despite even the most remote possibility.

i HOPE the police would give a ticket on each and every occasion.

eta: i've had enough of the nonsense on this thread....seriously, i hope nobody who thinks returning a shopping cart is so important that they'd leave their children (under 6 not under the supervision of a child at leas 12) alone in a car ever finds their own child missing. we've seen far too many tragedies lately with missing children. give 'em all big hugs and kisses everybody.

in the words we wish arnold would say: i won't be back.

Sometimes I put the cart away. Sometimes I just don't feel like it. When I don't, I smirk as I leave the lot thinking about all the angry people I've left in my wake. :goodvibes

I'm sorry you have a misunderstanding of the laws, but they are regarding leaving a young child in specific, potentially dangerous, circumstances such as extreme weather, alone for an extended period of time, or with the ignition keys available. These laws have absolutely NOTHING to do with the time it takes to return your cart to the corral. Not a thing.

Damaging vehicles is oh-so-funny:rotfl:

It is though! I always check round me before I open my car door. If the coast is clear, I throw it open with all my force so I can dent the car next to me. Sometimes it takes 2-3 tries to get a really good dent if it's a German made car.:thumbsup2

:lmao:

I just came back from the grocery store. I did NOT put my cart in the corral. There are only 3 corrals in the entire parking lot. All of them at the far end of the row. The way the parking lot is laid out, I would have had to walk to the end of the row I was parked in (toward the store), over 4 rows, and then down to the end of that row. There are islands (with grass and trees) between each row. They're just too freakin' inconvenient to use.

While I read at least one post that seemed rather sarcastic mentioning that the stores "hire people for that." This is an entirely true statement, depending on the store. The particular store I shop in hires several mildly cognitively impaired adults. Collecting the carts is one of their duties. It's something they can accomplish easily. I like the idea of my local grocery store hiring them and I don't think it's demeaning that one of their jobs is to collect carts in the parking lot.

That is lazy. On my lazy days I park right next to a corral, just so I don't have to walk far once DD is in the car. On nice days DD and I walk the cart back to the corral together. Target in my area is bad for runaway carts. I've had to catch one coming down the hill on a windy day.

As a woman, I think it's ALWAYS a good a idea at night time to park near the corral because it's usually the best lit spot in the parking lot and you have less exposure to anyone who is seeking to do you harm.

For those of you who don't want to put your children at risk, do the grocery chains in your area not offer carry out? I can be with my 15 yr old son, and my grocery clerk still asks if I need carry out assistance.

And if it's not offered, could you still ask for it?

Years ago, there was a 2 year old taken right out of the car in a parking lot while her mother unloaded groceries. I would never, ever take that chance with my kids.

When my kids were little - I had 2 that were 19 months apart - I pushed the cart up between parking spots. Now that they are older, I return it to the corrals.

I have never seen that in the grocery stores around here...not even for elderly or obviously impaired people.

The grocery stores where I live do carry out if you want it. They always offer.

WOW, that's sad to hear. I just assumed any chain would offer that as part of their service. Either way - whether they carry out for you, or have to bring the basket back to corral - they still are working.

It may be a regional thing. In my 44 yrs of living in New England, shopping here & working here, I've never encountered a store that asks if you need help getting food to your car. I'm also not aware of any stores here that have curb-side pick up of groceries. Last one I saw of those was in the 1970s.

Only place I see people being offered help is at big box stores like Walmart & Kmart if you buy something like a TV or furniture and they bring it to the register for you from the back room on a dolly cart, then bring it to the front door and that's as far as they go. They'll help get it into your car if you need help.

If you ask, I'm sure they would page someone, but it might take 2 pages to go outside.

Again, I'm sure different areas of the country are different since someone mentioned valet parking at a grocery store in Boca. That would NEVER exist here in New England. I think we are cheap & old fashioned here. We don't want our grocery prices going up by paying for these extra "luxuries" like curbside pickup & valet. I don't think we tend to drive cars we are all that concerned about a ding in. Heck, if you live here your car is filthy 6 months out of the year due to snow & road salt/sand anyway. We as a whole aren't polishing our cars in our driveways every Saturday. ;)

Wanted to add, even my elderly parents aren't offered help getting food to the car. I mean you live here, you can clean off the snow, shovel out your car & get to the store, they probably figure you can get the food to the car just fine too. LOL

I think we are a tough breed up here sometimes. lol
