Why do people hate the Proud of your Honor Student for Bumper Stickers?

And there are kids on the football team, or the swim team etc that work just as hard as the star athlete. Yet they just dont have the same ability.

DS14 is the honor roll student who played football, he loved it but was not very good at it. At the banquet, his coaches were nice enough to acknowledge the fact that he worked to the best of HIS abilities, he gave 110% but still was not very good at it. But it was the star athletes who won the awards, who got acknowledged outside of the banquet etc.

Should those athletes not get honored bc there were others on the team who gave their best but were not the ones who scored the multiple touchdowns or interceptions etc?

In every aspect of life, there are people who worked to the best of their ability, who work really hard but just dont excel but do a good job, hence the top salespeople awards etc.

I see academics as different.

And just in case someone decides to be snarky and imply my child must not be on the honor roll, she is. I am proud of her hard work. But I don't see it as any more of an accomplishment than her good friend who busts her butt but still gets C's and B's. She works every bit as hard as DD and her B's are every bit as much of an accomplishemnt as dd's A's.

They don't bother me nor do the million and one back window stickers proclaiming whatever sport/all star team a kid made (most of them here seem to be baseball or softball around here).

But I would love to see some that simply say "Proud parent of my child"--because I think its important to be proud of our children for just being who they are.

It seems like half the cars around here have that bumper sticker or "My child was student of the week at XXX." FWIW, I think every kid gets to be student of the week at some time. I don't have bumper stickers, only 2 decals - one for my alma mater and one for my kids' alma mater.

Sure but would you put a bumper sticker on your car that said "Proud of my husband the top salesperson at XYZ company"? I can't imagine anyone wouldn't find that obnoxious.

IDK...with all due respect you seem to be missing the point. We're not talking about being honored, we're talking about bumper stickers. You can recognize and reward and be proud of your honor student without announcing it to the world every time you get into the driver's seat.

And just for kicks.......... are you really ready for a day when people plaster their cars with bumper stickers that announce their child's nomination to team captain, MVP award for the basketball season, gold medal at the champioship swim meet, blue ribbon in the science fair etc. etc. And you really aren't going to find that a wee bit obnoxious? And if you wouldn't, how is that really any different than the honor roll bumper sticker?

Because a long time ago I brought one home from school where they had passed them out to all the honor roll students and I showed it to my parents, figuring they'd want to put it on their car. "Sweetie," they said, "Those are for people who find it a real accomplishment for their kids to be on the honor roll, as opposed to it being expected of them as a matter of course. And also, we don't want to mess up the cars."

I don't have any bumper stickers, but I do have a Darwin fish.

I dont see academics as different at all. I think it is a major accomplishment when my kids achieve academic milestones. I dont have a bumper sticker and dont do stickers, more of a magnet girl but I am super proud and still dont get the hate about the stickers.

I done begrudge the QB's parents of their son's talent but I am super proud and happy when my football player who may only play the minimum gets that tackle. He worked just as hard, but it definitely came easier to some of the other lineman.

People have all kinds of stickers/magnets around here about teams their kids made, and some of them have a stringent tryout process, so these kids made it because of their abilities and the parents are proud of that...what is the difference?


Like I said our school doesnt have these, I dont do bumper stickers etc. I dont truly care, I just dont and still dont get the hate of the stickers. If someone's kid accomplished something and they want to shout it from the rooftops etc, go for it. My family is a little more low key but I certainly dont find it obnoxious or care if someone wants to have a banner fly over the town.

So long as you would be equally as supportive of a bumper sticker touting every other possible accomplishment all's good. At least you're consistent

What is a Darwin Fish sticker?

You know those little metal fish that sometimes say "Jesus"or have a tiny cross, or are sometimes just the traditional Christian fish symbol? Well, Darwin fish are a version of that but instead they say 'Darwin' and the fish have little feet. I was a Biology major, concentrating in evolution and ecology, so it fits for me. I've also seen a version where a large 'Truth' fish is devouring a tiny Darwin fish, which I think is hilarious.

I always felt the same way. I never put anything on my car, no bumper stickers, no special plates, no stuffed animals in the back window, nothing hanging from the rear view mirror. And I liked it that way...
Until we bought our latest car, a black Impala. Ugh. Do you know how many cars look just like an Impala??? And, I seem to have hit the age when I never remember where I parked.... I had to give in.
I bought a Colts license plate just so I could locate my vehicle before the ice cream melts or the milk sours.

As far as the sports or honor roll stickers. I don't really care one way or the other. I've seen them, but never thought twice about it until it came up on the Dis.

Here in Texas, all of our bumper stickers are about prying guns from people's cold dead hands.

And then there's my rainbow ones...

At least gun racks in the back window aren't as common as they used to be.

I think they're silly, and my daughter is on the honor roll. She knows we're proud of her, and that's what matters. Honor roll students are a dime a dozen. Sure, it's great that a kid is on it, but honestly, I don't see it as a major accomplishment in life.

The majority of kids in our local high school are enrolled in honors level classess or higher. Being in College Prep level isn't enough any more and forgot it if your kid is enrolled in standard level Being on the honor roll is par for the course...more are on it than not so really, who cares

Be proud of you child, tell him everyday...but the rest of us don't need to hear it too! There are so many kids who are not recognized for their accomplishments because they're not mainstream or not noticed by the "right" people.

I don't like public bragging. Period. Not on bumper stickers, not on facebook-people actually posting their kids exam grades and final averages. Blows my mind. Tell your family and close friends and of course let your kids know you are proud of them.

Maybe it just means that people shouldn't be so quick to assume 'honor roll' is always the same. In my district Honors is for students who get all A's and B's. High Honors is for all A's.

So again it all comes back to being proud of your own child for whatever his accomplishment(s) might be. The titles are unnecessary extraneous information.
