Why do I turn into a blabbering idiot when I have anesthesia?

I have a colonoscopy tomorrow.

They really don't bother me but every time I have anesthesia for any type of surgical procedure I wake up in the recovery room and I seem to talk non-stop.

My Dh did an impersonation of me last night of how I act and he was spot on.


Is there something in the anesthesia that causes this? I am normally a pretty quiet person.

Do you think the nurses would put tape over my mouth if I asked them to?

I did the same thing during my colonoscopy. Told everyone my whole life story and had no idea I was doing it. I thought I was sleeping. The next time I went, I asked for a little less anesthesia or duct tape over my mouth. They opted for less anesthesia.
I am happy to say----I did not talk (much) and the Dr. was quite impressed.
I must admit, I did feel a little bit of pain during the procedure but I would rather have that than the pain I would feel from opening my mouth and inserting my foot.

It's just so awkward. I can only imagine some of the things I say. Maybe I'll bring my own duct tape.


I did call today and ask if I could have the option of being more awake and she said the patients who want conscious sedation have to go first or last that day and those appointments were already taken.

I never thought to ask when I scheduled the appointment.

I could have rescheduled but there is no way I'm doing this prep again.

I am a quiet type by nature, but give me some anesthesia and I start thanking every nurse and doctor profusely! Every medical procedure I've ever had anesthesia for I've done this. Seems I wake up grateful to be alive and start my academy award speech.

Last time I was "under" I woke up with the blinding insight that tow trucks should be called finger trucks, because nobody lifts things with their toes. I also remember saying "wheee" when they spun the gurney around to put me in the elevator. My dad just patted my hand & told me to get some sleep!

I know what you mean, the last time I was out for an operation (gallbladder) I had this happen, unfortunately one of the nurses was my best friend's DSIL and I hve always wondered if I said something I shouldn't have.

Oh, and give me full sedation anytime over being partially awake during a procedure. I don't care what I say afterwards, I don't want to be awake while its going on if at all possible!

The last time the put me under, I woke up speaking French. This freaked the nurses out since they weren't expecting it. I remember being quite confused when they kept telling me to speak English...

I've been thinking what some people might say like calling their spouses the wrong name or something so now I've got it in my head that I might do that. Then I start thinking about what I might call him.

OMG. I would wonder, too.


I had a surgical procedure last year and my OB did it. About a week before the procedure I was in the pharmacy and two of the customers started talking to the clerk about how hot my particular Dr. was. I guess a lot of the women in town go to him.

Of course, when I saw him the morning of the procedure that conversation was all I could think about even though I hadn't thought anything like that before. I still wonder what I said after I went under.

Last week my MIL had a colonoscopy and I was her 'person' to stay with her and drive her home. The nurse came to get me before she woke from the anesthesia. I sat next to her and she started waking up. The second she started coming to she was sooo angry! She started showing me her hand and VERY loudly telling me about the damn nurse that stuck her too many times trying to get the IV in. She continued on and on and on getting louder and louder and working herself up into a frenzy over it.

Finally I was able to quiet her down and the Doctor gave me a thumbs up behind her back. I thought all was good when the nurse appeared and my MIL started in all over again loud enough to tell the nurse that she was no good at finding veins and someone else had to do it for her! Of course my MIL denied all this a few hours later. I told my husband its his turn next time.

The last time I had surgery, a few years ago, I had a similar discussion with my anesthesiologist. When I wake up, I am always bawling my eyes out. It is super embarrassing and I know I'm doing it but cannot stop. He laughed and reassured me he and the Dr. and nurses have seen it all many times over and not to worry about it. It happens...But still, I really felt the need to warn everyone I could that day!

I haven't ever gone under but both my parents turned into the biggest flirts you ever seen when they went under. And neither 1 was a flirt at all, far from it. We always had fun when they went under. LOL The hospital people always thought we were such great kids for being there!! We enjoyed the laughs later

I'm glad I'm not the only one who talks in the recovery room after anaesthesia -- the problem is this: I tell dirty jokes when I'm coming out of anaesthesia. Here's another problem: I'm a Lutheran minister. The real problem is this: I think some of these jokes are really good while telling them, but I can't remember them after!!!

When I had my tonsils out, I woke up and thought I heard the nurses talking about going out back and getting drunk on Wild Turkey. Apparently, I said, "Wow, you guys are the coolest nurses ever!" and continued babbling from there. My mom and dad were told that I was the most popular girl in the recovery room. Yay me.

I've only been under once (arm surgery) and I don't recall ever saying anything bad while I was under.

I DO remember (after 8-9 hrs or so of labor)telling DS to kick,scream, etc and I was YELLING it across the delivery room. I also remember cheering when DMIL told him she'd watched him pee all over the nurses in the nursery when they were cleaning him up.

That's ok. When I had my wisdom teeth out, they put me under using gas. When I was brought back to consciousness, I got upset and demanded that they put me back under, because I was not in the right dimension.

It was about 2 hours later when the meds wore off that I was finally convinced I was not in the wrong place, lol.

When I had wrist surgery a few yrs ago, I opted for just being sedated without the full sleep, I can't remember anything till I woke up in post op, but the nurses said that all through the operation I alternated between laughing hysterically and crying, and when I woke up after the op I do remember laughing so hard that I couldn't stop. I have to have my wisdom teeth taken out in May, so we'll see what happens then. Somehow I don't think there will be much talking going on
