Why do I feel like I am being punished by DVC for buying resale?

In all honesty, the perks have been worthless to me thus far. I don't visit that often so the AP is too much. The souvenir discount is nominal. I vacation in January so pool-hopping is out. Not having to grab cash for the laundry machine is probably my best benefit.

Is there a perk you were really looking forward to? Because between AAA, being a Disney Visa cardholder, or some other program it's probably still available to you.

The thing that bugs me most about DVC perks is Disney management just doesn't understand how their system works. They did this huge anniversary perk/celebration for DVC. And announced it all less than 11 months out... meaning if you got to do anything for the anniversary it was just dumb luck. That was extremely aggravating.

I sold my car the other day and was pretty annoyed when I found out I could no longer drive it to work! Some guy came and took it away! That is totally outrageous considering I bought it retail, I should get the benefit for life -- right? If I sell my house next, what -- will I have to move out?

Must remember all these analogies...

The thing is people consider Disney to be Disney, but from an accounting standpoint, DVD is separate from parks, separate from restaurant ops, etc. P&L is all handled differently.

Even though you're using them all together and see them as a unit, accounting doesn't. It's much more like when Phillip Morris merged with Kraft. Your purchase of Marlboros didn't help the attainment statements of the people selling you Kraft Dinner. Obviously, that's a much more distinct example, but Disney accounting actually works exactly the same way.
yeah I get it, business is business. I think you're right. I have a hard time remembering that. Disney has always been such a magical place for our family and they are always so accommodating. So this was just kind of different for us.

Primarily we use it for dining. A lot! and there are 7 of us so it does make a difference. And yes we are Disney Visa card holders, but I looked at their perks a saw that the restaurant discounts are a little lower than I thought they were last year. We also do annual passes, and I thought they had told me when we were buying that that discount was not going to be available. However, someone in this thread said the Gold AP is still an option for us. That, I did not know! So that was exciting.

The Gold AP might not be available or it might be???? Nobody really knows right now. On another website a person said they called up Disney about it, and were told that they weren't allowed because they were a resale owner. So, I wouldn't count on it, but you can always try.

They understand the system better than we do. They offer these events because they look good in their advertisements/sales presentations, not because they want us to attend.

Oh no really!? So I logged into my profile and it is listed there that I am able to buy a gold AP for about 549.00 pp but I wonder if I tried to go all the way through with the purchase if it wouldn't let me. I also wonder if its remaining an option for me bc we just sold GF a little while ago (5 mo s ago though). As in it isn't updated in the system yet that I went from a direct purchaser to a resale purchaser. Maybe I should buy them right now!

You sold GF just 5 months ago? How was any of this a surprise then?

Losing perks is on a list of "should we sell bay lake or not?" for us. It has value to us. Not huge value, but value.

Did you not consider the value of the perks before you sold and got a huge amount of resale points later?

I'm a post 4/2016 resale owner, and I can also purchase the $549.00 Gold AP on the website. My profile on the MDE website shows me as a DVC member, so that is why I think it allows me to purchase the Gold AP at this time. It could be a loophole or just bad web design. But the problem comes when you have to pick it up with the "white" membership card.

I was trying to not be cynical today :hippie:

Dean, lets just agree to disagree okay? I thought I explained it. You and I can have different opinions and thats totally fine.
Also, on the toyota example again...if you want to get really picky about it. 1) you have alternative places to service your vehicle. You do not have to choose toyota. unless its something only they can do and that is rare. 2) why would you? Its so expensive haha! I almost had to take my Mazda into a dealer to have it serviced their labor per hour charge was outrageous!! ON that note, you buy DVC, you use it at Disney or its allocated locations.
Either way, I am happy with the decision I made about resale. Like I said though, just kinda bummed about the perks being gone. But I know you are not understanding that, so here- I retract my comment, I am no longer annoyed with DVC. I do not feel like I am being punished. There.
There's nothing to disagree on. It's unreasonable to be upset with them in this situation given the situation you were in and the knowledge you had.

Okay YES guys, I knew that I was losing benefits by not purchasing direct from Disney. I obviously knew my options and made my choice. Yes, I got a great deal on AKV, and yes we sold our GF for more than we paid- however, after commission etc, we broke even. It was just too small of a contract to do anything with.

I think especially because, did they not just revoke this privilege recently? Right about the time we bought resale. We were, at the time, debating buying more direct points and talking to the agents we felt like they were sort of pushing that "privileges were being revoked was a big deal." Also, that they couldn't guarantee that more wouldn't be taken away? (What is left, I don't know.) It was kind of a weird interaction with Disney in general maybe.

I understand the implications of everything I did. Just bummed that certain perks are taken away, that is all.

And yes, anything that DVC can do to make their customers feel special is all part of the game, I get that. That feeling of exclusivity=$$.

Congrats on breaking even on GF, don't hear that often. Even with banking & borrowing was your small contract 'too small"? Regardless, that ship has sailed.

Even knowing that changes were on the horizon, it has to be upsetting to feel shut out. Your feeling are your own, no right or wrong there. However, those who purchase direct have valid points as to feeling they paid 'more' & appreciate any extra perks they may toss out.

okay dean, I'm an unreasonable person. Not sure what else you want me to say.

You got 150 more points though, so you're doing better than breaking even to me! :)

Yeah! it was too small to really do anything. We go every year so banking and borrowing was not something we could do. In the past we may have been okay with just the 50 points. But in the last 3 or so years January-when we usually go- has become so busy that booking in the 7 month window wasn't working. We always combine vacations and points with my parents. Also, we always end up at BWV or BCV. Because of how many of us there are. Therefore, using GF in that 7 month window just wasn't working anymore. We didn't own GF for very long thats for sure. I think we bought at 155 pp and sold at 160. But with commission it was about even afterward.

Yeah I'd want perks if I paid 150 pp! I think too if we had bought a week or so earlier we would still have the perks though. But, maybe the contract we bought would have been more expensive too.

I'm not sure the headline matches the reality here. If the OP knew about the reduction in perks for resale buyers before they bought resale, how is Disney punishing them? If it was a bait and switch, that would be different but it doesn't sound like that's the case. I have to say that I once thought we should consider DVC as we are usually down to the world once a year. These boards have convinced me not to. I get dizzy just reading about banking and borrowing, split stays, 11 months versus 7 months, annual dues and lack of real choice to visit many other places. Add in the reduced perks for resale and the inflated costs of buying direct and, well you get the picture. It sounds like these things are not a problem for many of you but it's just not right for me.

OP, I hope you can get past your disappointment and enjoy your investment. You might consider a small, direct add on contract to get back your perks (if I read previous threads correctly!).

Totally annoyed with DVC over this.
If you really want to feel punished, how about handing over your CC to Disney to charge "at will"? That is where I'm at right now ...

We attended the Nov Member's event at Disneyland's California Adventure and spoke with the ticketing desk about upgrading to Deluxe APs. We never signed the contract to purchase the APs as we did not agree to the terms. We watched the agent rip up the document and toss it away. BUT -- on 12/1 we receive an email welcoming us to our new Deluxe APs. Yep, indeed -- Disney has been charging our credit card each month for the new passes. They refuse to cancel the passes over the phone and are making life difficult, indeed. They were supposed to send a "copy" of my signed agreement by snail mail on 12/3 ... but it hasn't yet arrived. I wonder if they intend to fake the document as they have dozens of copies of my signature on countless forms? Arg. Why am *I* being punished, Disney? Why?
