Why do I feel like I am being punished by DVC for buying resale?

Oh maybe bc I am! ha! We owned GF which we bought through DVC. We were actually buying into GF bc at the time the agent basically told us that they weren't sure that Polynesian would be available to non-members when they released those points. Thus, we thought we could use points right away anyway and GF was being sold at the time. Well...they released Poly and man we were not impressed with the accommodations nor the price tag. Also, at the time GF was selling resale for more than we paid for it. So, we sold our 50 GF and bought 200 AKL resale. Now, they have revoked our DVC cards and the discounts that go with it. I can't help but think, dang, we pay dues like everyone else, not to mention, they made their dime on the timeshare when they sold initially. I mean, I totally get that they want me to buy AKL from them for double what I paid resale. But why would I? Especially for a shorter timeshare? And if its such a "problem" for them, why even allow resale to occur?

Maybe they are just revoking privileges across the board. I seem to remember when my parents bought into DVC in the 90's that they had so many perks. Free annual pass or something along those lines.

Totally annoyed with DVC over this.

Not much of a club, eh?

I'm not a fan of going this direction to encourage direct sales but they want to be like other timeshares. So in the box but that's also the new Disney. Still, it would be a long, long, long time to makes up the savings you got on your 200pt AKV purchase. That should make you smile!

You're right, the savings is far greater than all the 15% discounts on meals we 'd get.

When you sold and rebought, surely you were aware of the changes that were coming down the pike? Are you surprised that they've "revoked" the card? Hasn't it been nearly a year since they announced those changes?

I don't like it that they've watered it down either; it bugs me. But they do announce it in advance.

I doubt you lost anything near what you saved.

To my understanding, it has not yet been determined if you still qualify for a gold AP.... which is truly the best perk.

Before we bought, we spent most of the time trying to understand why on earth someone would go direct over resale. I think Disney will worry about the same things and finally they have put some incentives in place. As previous posters have said, the incentives don't come anywhere near the savings from buying resale.

I'm not sure why you'd be annoyed. You knew or should have known this before you sold your points. The perks aren't paid for by the dues. Their either given free to DVD or paid for by DVD. My Toyota Dealership has a VIP lounge for those that buy retail from them. If you bought my Toyota, you wouldn't be able to use the VIP lounge; same thing.

Disney knows how people think and they use it to their business advantage. No one wants to be left out so Disney creates competition and the feeling of being special. Owning DVC is presented as being something special when in fact all it is pre-paying for your hotel room which may save you some money. The DVC direct perks are presented as something special when in fact, many of the perks are never used by many of the owners. Owning an AP is presented as being something special when in fact it may not save you money but you now get a special AP entrance.

It is all part of the show.

in addition to what others posted, consider that, according to what you wrote, you sold VGF for more than what you paid for it. higher priced direct sales help retain the value of a product, but often need to have some sort of incentive to justify the higher price tag.
imho, you should be happy that you were able to make a profit by selling the VGF contract, AND were able to save more money by purchasing a discounted AKV contract.....all the while knowing that you wouldn't have access to the benefits associated with the sold contact.

enjoy your decision & your new contract! :goodvibes

Okay YES guys, I knew that I was losing benefits by not purchasing direct from Disney. I obviously knew my options and made my choice. Yes, I got a great deal on AKV, and yes we sold our GF for more than we paid- however, after commission etc, we broke even. It was just too small of a contract to do anything with.

I think especially because, did they not just revoke this privilege recently? Right about the time we bought resale. We were, at the time, debating buying more direct points and talking to the agents we felt like they were sort of pushing that "privileges were being revoked was a big deal." Also, that they couldn't guarantee that more wouldn't be taken away? (What is left, I don't know.) It was kind of a weird interaction with Disney in general maybe.

I understand the implications of everything I did. Just bummed that certain perks are taken away, that is all.

And yes, anything that DVC can do to make their customers feel special is all part of the game, I get that. That feeling of exclusivity=$$.

I don't see how this is the same thing necessarily. With Disney timeshare, even though you are using resale points to stay you are also paying for food, park tickets, merchandise, etc... A lot of money going back to Disney. Arguably the same amounts that someone who bought direct is. Not to mention a possible 50 years of this. You buy a Toyota resale you are not giving Toyota any money period. Kind of apples and oranges.

I understand that you're implying that its an incentive type situation though. I think when we bought, because they were revoking some privileges at the same time, it wasn't so much an incentive to buy direct but more of a don't buy resale bc disney will pull privileges/ you might regret your decision type situation. Like who knows what will be next. Kind of trying to scare us into buying direct.

Historically, thankfully anything that DVC now take away won't be passed back to existing resale purchasers. We just missed out on being able to spend points on the Disney Adventure stuff, but to be honest I don't think there is the same value in that for the points. We were however in before they removed issuing cards e.t.c.

While it is a scare tactic, it's a real one based on realities. They can't/won't guarantee perks because they can't control them and the costs may change over time like the valet parking issue. Remember DVD is a separate legal entity and must function independently from an accounting standpoint. That other companies in Disney get money from DVC members is really irrelevant. On the Toyota example, they would get money from you if you used their service department but you'd have to wait in the normal waiting area rather than the VIP lounge while paying the same or likely a little more.

Then I don't understand why you said you felt like you were being punished. You knew what would happen, you made an informed choice and decided the savings was worth the loss. Did you think they'd end up saying "just kidding"?

Dean, lets just agree to disagree okay? I thought I explained it. You and I can have different opinions and thats totally fine.
Also, on the toyota example again...if you want to get really picky about it. 1) you have alternative places to service your vehicle. You do not have to choose toyota. unless its something only they can do and that is rare. 2) why would you? Its so expensive haha! I almost had to take my Mazda into a dealer to have it serviced their labor per hour charge was outrageous!! ON that note, you buy DVC, you use it at Disney or its allocated locations.
Either way, I am happy with the decision I made about resale. Like I said though, just kinda bummed about the perks being gone. But I know you are not understanding that, so here- I retract my comment, I am no longer annoyed with DVC. I do not feel like I am being punished. There.

yeah that was my next concern/question. Thats good to know!! Yeah totally worth the value for sure.

The thing is people consider Disney to be Disney, but from an accounting standpoint, DVD is separate from parks, separate from restaurant ops, etc. P&L is all handled differently.

Even though you're using them all together and see them as a unit, accounting doesn't. It's much more like when Phillip Morris merged with Kraft. Your purchase of Marlboros didn't help the attainment statements of the people selling you Kraft Dinner. Obviously, that's a much more distinct example, but Disney accounting actually works exactly the same way.

I sold my car the other day and was pretty annoyed when I found out I could no longer drive it to work! Some guy came and took it away! That is totally outrageous considering I bought it retail, I should get the benefit for life -- right? If I sell my house next, what -- will I have to move out?

Hehe. I knew people would jump on this when I saw it yesterday. I get your point, but still you got a great deal. :) I bought resale, but I don't feel cheated. I'm happy w my purchase and thinking about adding on. I was annoyed when they changed the perks when we'd been thinking about it for years, but if anything, that served to help me get a little lower price on my purchase. Looking back at ROFRs from the end of 2015, BLT has come down a lot. Can't say if the perks caused that, but whether it's causal or not, I got a better price now than I would have if I had bought a year ago with the perks. So much so that my savings on 160 points exceeds the extra cost of buying 25 points at retail to get the perks I want. Then I bought 6 APs for another $1200 savings. Now I'm set for this year-- and next years trip.

One thing I like is that by putting the direct purchase in both of our names, we each got a little blue card, so when we split up we can separately utilize the discounts, instead of having to be together or share one card.

hahaha! with the car thing. very funny. Yeah Ol' Dean there is giving me a hard time. haha. But yeah I never thought about the fact that AKV were probably cheaper for us bc of that. We actually bought the week they released the restriction. So hey maybe we made out better than we would have before. It was just so unlike disney, and the sales department was kind of aggressive and annoyed (for obv. reasons) that I had decided to buy resale, so I'm sure they were throwing extra reasons to not buy resale my way. haha.
