Why do I feel like a 2nd class citizen?

I live locally so I don't have airfare to contend with, but back when Free Dining was such a better deal ( apps and grats included) we booked trips at a Value resort for 10-14 nights and just banked our points for the next year or used them for other trips at other times of the year when the cash deals weren't so spectacular. I had a choice, and my choice was to take advantage of FD and to sacrifice the nicer lodgings to save money. I've enjoyed every single trip I've taken to WDW and have stayed at every resort including the campground. There's no reason we can't take advantage of any special offers that are given to cash guests and figure how we want to use our points. To me that's the beauty of DVC- the flexibility and not being forced into "one size fits all". I love being a DVC member, esp. when we're renting a 2 bedroom or grand villa. I look at what the cash price would be for those properties for the length of stay we want and know I'd never fork over that cash, but the points? Oh, yeah.----Kathy

I try to use the best of both worlds....I didn't purchase enough points to pay for all my time at Disney each year. I use my points in combination with my AP discount or a pin code (got one for this year) and do split stays most of the time in both DVC and deluxe resorts. I actually kind of like staying at the Wilderness lodge at times rather than the villas...same with AKV or the boardwalk. I don't mind switching resorts and I feel like I'm able to take advantage of both systems. I'm very flexible in my travel dates, which helps with the CRO ressies and someday if/when the 40-45% discount disappears, I'll add on more points....

Disney is a business and behind the curtain it is as cut throat as any other business. Departments fight with each other and compete for position, bonuses are paid based upon performance, Managers are under pressure to increase profits, Guides are under pressure to sell contracts.

IMHO, most of us assume the Disney is not like other businesses and that we expect them to focus on the Guest experience and nothing else. That is what we have been trained to expect. Years of Disney commercials and brain washing taught us that Disney is a magical place where dreams come true.

While that was more possible and prevalent in the past, today is a different story. Cast Members, until a few years ago were required to attend a 5 day class on the Disney way. Today the class is less that 8 hours long.

I think that most of us are upset because Disney has changed contrary to what we have been taught,
not because some perks have changed. IMHO

:earsboy: Bill

I don't normally use these boards to whine, but today I have to admit I'm feeling a little bit blue. (And that's saying a lot since we're leaving in less than three weeks for WDW and I'm so excited I can barely see straight!)

I was so disappointed to see that Disney is continuing to offer deep discounts to pretty much anyone and everyone, with the exception of us. (Us being DVCers.) We continue to receive less, while others get more. And we're the ones who deserve it!

I know, I know. Disney is a business. They need revenue anywhere they can get it and they already have our money. Yadda yadda yadda. But would it really kill them to take care of their loyal followers - just a little bit?

Thanks for letting me vent. That was all I really needed. Disney, if you're listening, we'd like just a small bit of recognition here if you can muster it. :-)
I'm not sure that we "deserve" anything other than what we purchased as DVC members. Getting perks like dscounts on APs is a great added benefit that I appreciate. It also helps Disney because that darn first AP is what started me coming more often to WDW in the first place! First an AP, then buying into DVC.

As for perks, I like the AP discounts. I liked getting the 20% discount in the parks in December and January and I look forward to getting 10% next week. It's better than nothing! I'd love if there was a 20% discount all year long. I'm sure I'd buy even more than I already do.

I don't know. I knew what I was getting into when I bought DVC (and admit that I was very happy with my purchase prices.) I like a more deluxe accomodation. I would never be happy with free QSDP staying at an All-Star resort. If you want to take advantage of "deals" rent your points out and book one. Or sell your DVC and roll the dice and hope the deals keep coming. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy my DVC. I like my AP discount. I bought Cirque du Soleil tickets at a 35% discount for our stay next week, courtesy of a DVC discount. My guide always calls and welcomes me home when I'm at Disney. I don't ever feel like a second class citizen. :confused3

Just a thought;do you have a special relationship with your guide? In all our years we have never had a call whilst in WDW.We have three contracts, and visit every year and gift points to our children, and mostly I am always pleased we bought into DVC.Sometimes though get the feeling that across the "pond" we are sort of "out of the loop" Do you get all of this discount info from DVCmember.com or is it word of mouth.Yesterday was the first I had ever heard from this board that we are able to buy an annual pass and get a discount! Still, looking forward to arriving in May-Boston-7 nights then on to AKL and BLT 14 nights can't wait!!

I've been a member over 10 years and only got a call from a guide a couple of times. My original guide left and I was assigned a new one. To be honest, I really don't care to hear from her because I have no intention of buying more points. That's the main reason they would call.

You know it's funny, when we purchased our contracts I didn't even know anything about the "perks". Evidently some people think they are very important. I don't hardly ever look at that little book we get at check in and quite often we miss out on discounts. To me it is no big deal. I bought my contacts to pre-pay for future vacations pure and simple, not get side benefits to make me feel special.

what is starting to get my goat a little is the seasonal pricing. It used to be just a holiday had holiday pricing, and you got a nice, fancy holiday meal for it. Now seasonal pricing is like 1/2 the year or something. So all summer it is seasonal pricing, so that they can give away the dining plan in september to try to fill hotel rooms. Plus it seems like the quality is going down while the prices go up.

When I was a kid, I used to love the pbj sandwhiches at Aunt Polly's. That was my magic kingdom meal. At least partly because the burgers and other stuff were so AWFUL. But they got better, they really did, and few years ago we used to look forward to going to Disney and eating. It is a shame because they had gotten pretty good. Not so much anymore, it makes me less likely to eat less meals on property. I mean basically, there are only a couple of places I like to eat at theme parks anymore, and only a few of the hotels for that matter.

Classic "grass is greener on thte other side" mentality. Trust me, a lot of people look at DVC members and are jealous of us too.

By saying we are 2nd class citizens at Disney, you are implying that the "general public" is being treated better, and I just don't see that. As was said before, the discounts they are giving through CRO are just an illusion. They constantly mix up what is included in the "deal" to make it seem new and worthwhile, but in the end, you almost always end up paying the same. While the DVC perks come and go, at least you always know what the rooms are going to cost (save for the point reallotments), and it does cost less in comparison to what the SAME room would cost if you went through CRO (even with the CRO "discounts"), especially as time moves on.

Also, you can complain about the perks that get taken away, most notably the valet parking recently, but we actually have it pretty good. Particularly, the AP discount and free internet are great and significant perks. Also, DVC members are allowed to obtain the Dining Pacakge and use the Magical Express, two programs that are designed more to bring in the average CRO customer Disney, and not as beneficial for them to offer to DVC members.

I recently booked a studio for my brother for a week, and I first compared what it would cost to rent/tranfer the points for it, and what it would cost with the current CRO discounts. The DVC route won hands down (unless he were to stay at ASM).

They already "have us" for the next several years.. why do anything more???

Do I feel I should be "entitled" to perks and pleasures as a DVC member? Absolutely not. Do I think DVC could do a better job of leveraging the ever increasing membership numbers to obtain some additional pot sweeteners for us? I do think they could do better. (as AAA, AARP and other groups successfully negotiate for their members) If they don't choose to do so, I'm not going to go all boo-hooey either though.

An acquaintance recently asked me about DVC and the benefits of being a member. I gave him the old "room for the next 40-50 years" speech and the requisite warning to "not expect much else". That was the end of his interest in DVC.

I've been a member over 10 years and only got a call from a guide a couple of times. My original guide left and I was assigned a new one. To be honest, I really don't care to hear from her because I have no intention of buying more points. That's the main reason they would call.

I think the last call from my guide was in 2000, a year after we bought into DVC. I just contacted Member Services to find out our guide's name and was told I don't have one and to call the sales department and they would assign me one. :confused3 Needless to say I didn't jump to call since I have no say on who (or how good/nice) my new guide would be. :sad2: Any recommendations??

When I see DVC'ers claim to feel like 'second class citizens' the first thought that pops into my head is that, yes, DVC is a far cry from staying in a suite at the GF with daily maid and nightly turn down services with chocolates on the pillows. These folk clearly won't 'get' what DVCing is about as they're looking to be pampered to. I think we'd all agree that they may be best to sell their contract and go back to their hotel stays.

BUT... this isn't what writer is talking about so I'm a little confused about the issue.

The discount offers put out to the public are available to everyone, even us. If we want to stay 3 get 4 free (or whatever the deal is) we can. In fact it could be a great opportunity to take the years points and bank them for a longer or change in accommodations in the future. :goodvibes I do strongly recommend that anyone budget conscious do the math before falling for these though - Like with Kohls, Disney marks up their room rates far beyond their actual before discounting to make the deals look enticing. I'm willing to bet, that with exception of those few who put out for the full rate and the occasional "oops they found a loophole" accident by marketing, that the value remains pretty much constant over the years whether you're getting 40% off, free dining or buy n days get x free.

I look at it this way: I made the decision to invest in Disney's timeshare property and to make it my second home. Like with any real estate purchase, I don't expect the town, or in this case Disney, to toss any extras my way. As a matter of fact, Disney does! DVC has negotiated a number of discounts and freebies on our behalf over the years. My favorite: the reduced cost AP.

I am confused, you say the discounts are offered to anyone and everyone, but DVC owners. This is not true, you always have the ability to purchase one of these discounted packages or deals.

True, but not practical for many Members.
What do you suggest we do with our points if we continued to reserve cash deals?

Again, the cash discounts don't bother me personally. I'm just stating the facts.

After reviewing just a few of the benefits/discounts that DVC members have I can certainly understand why some feel like 2cd class citizens. . .;)

The problem is that most of those discounts are also offered with an AP.
The restaurant discounts are useless if you have TIW.

Besides, everyone can use a lodging or dining discount.
Not everyone can use a "Magnetron Magnetz" discount.

Ouch.

The benefits help me feel like I am saving money. Not special.

If I felt that strongly about CRO discounts versus DVC I'd split my stay....Half on DVC points and half on a nicely discounted package like free dining or 40% lodging. This way you are taking advantage of both.
