Why did they rename POR?

I know POR used to be called Dixie Landings.
I know, I'm a noob, so forgive me when I ask a question that is probably answered elsewhere.

I don't know for certain but I'm guessing that some guests might have found the name "Dixie" to be objectionable. It carries quite a bit of historical baggage.

I think this article gives a summary of the issues with the word "dixie." I was just surprised it took Disney so long to change the name - or that they named it that in the 1st place (and yes I'm originally from the south): http://www.post-gazette.com/regionstate/19980904dixie4.asp

At least they didn't have us pickin' cotton if we didn't stay in the "mansions."
