Im looking at flight for august compared to what we paid last year and the prices are so much higher?! Why is that? The economy is the same and so is gas?

It really depends on the dates and the competition in the market. What are the prices?
The airlines were losing money, they were forced to push up prices to be profitable. I think this year most are turning a profit. They are also reducing the number of flights so that most fly full.
I was wondering the same thing but last year we went early November so pretty much off season and next time we are going in June and I know its always more expensive but it's still frustrating!
Has Spirit and Airtran released their flights for your dates? If not, Delta prices will be higher until they do. At least that has been my experience with flying out of DTW. Have you checked FNT?
Did you try putting in less than 6? There might be cheaper seats with a lower number, you can split up your reservation. If there are 5 seats left with a cheaper price and you put in 6, they will give you the higher price for all 6.
$79 each way was unusually low even for last year. You must have lucked out and got them during a sale period.
You *may* find something for for less than $130 if you watch but it will be a gambling game. You could also run out of luck and have the prices go up even higher than $130 if the flight begins to fill up.

no...they have not. I've never flown Spirit...and I worry about booking Airtran since Southwest is taking over and if they will mix up/cancel flights out in August?
$260 round trip is not as low as it gets from DTW, but it's pretty close. I would not sneeze at that number. August is not exactly a peak time to fly to MCO (it's one of the few times of year that the weather up here is better) so prices *might* dip. But they might not.

OMG..... it's frustrating!
We've traveled in June many times and have always been able to get our tickets by this time and the most we've ever paid is $220 round trip which was just last year.
This year the cheapest we've found is $324 and that means we'd have to adjust our dates!!!
That is a 47% increase in just one year!!!
What is going on???!!!
Do we wait? or go with the big $$ in thinking it won't go down?
ugh!!!
My tickets out of DTW normally 220-240 every march same week, this year the lowest I could find 350! And that was with stops etc! Just the times I guess.

I think flights have gone up everywhere. As more airlines consolidate I think we will continue to see higher and higher prices. Also, the strengthening economy creates more demand that pushes prices up at the same time airlines have cut supply (flights). I can't remember the last time I was on a plane with more than one or two empty seats, unless to a smaller or subsidized city.
We currently have 205 each with Delta booked about a month ago for our flight in May coming home in June. I currently don't think we will get much better. I did get a delta sky miles card. It helped greatly with cost and no baggage fee. Yes I know we get an annual fee but so far I have came out ahead!
