Why could you NOT live without your cell phone?

No, really - we "get" cell phones. We - and that's not restricted to 'older people' simply don't see the need to be actively attached to one 24/7. People say today's kids won't know how to write or spell due to texting? Many of today's adults don't seem to know how to interact with other, live humans within their immediate range. The phone call - even the one in the supermarket aisle to talk about the weather in St. Thomas - is apparently more important than interacting with the person trying to get to the shelf being blocked by the person on the phone.

:thumbsup2

LOL.. :rotfl: If you hadn't quoted that, I never would have "seen" it - for obvious reasons..;)

:

popcorn:: So is that like a hint that you've got me on ignore????

Funny-I remember C.Ann posting a lot on my "Men are such Fools "thread a couple weeks ago.:confused3

SOMEBODY QUOTE ME!!!

This was the topic of conversation in one of my classes last week.

The professor announced that he doesn't have a cell phone. He has been called a maverick for this. I'm 44 and I'm guessing that he is a few years younger than me. He refuses to get a cell phone. He says that the current generation is obsessed with their cell phones and that soon there will be a DSM code for the "condition". His only class "rule" is about cell phones. If he sees someone texting or if it rings during class, he will answer the student's phone. It should be a fun semester! :thumbsup2

I still have a corded phone too. If our power goes out, then obviously the cordless doesn't work and we get very poor cell signal here so mine is pretty much useless when I'm home.

We have two corded phones at each house for exactly that reason. If someone hits a utility pole and the power goes out we can still use the phone in the house.

I need to be able to be reached by my doctors anytime adn I need to be able to reach them at all times.
I have a blackberry so I can return emails to my doctors right away which means I get responses quicker and I can get prescriptions that I need, questions answered etc even when I'm at school.
I use it for babysitting...I like the families I babysit for to be able to call me adn to not have to call our house becasue I never get messages from the home phone or from my parents
It has saved me from missing a lot of doctors appts. I have to drive in LA traffic weekly and even leaving 1 1/2 hours early (it should take 45 mins) we've still been late adn we call and tell them adn they fit me in. I would waste so much time if i couldnt do this

I've got one but probably use it about 3 times a year. It is rarely charged and I have no idea how to text. The rest of the family have them and use them a lot and text a lot. Go figure.

We also don't have cordless phones in our house!

I have a corded phone on my desk and by my bedside because my teens would run off with the phone never to be found again.:headache:

I live a different lifestyle with a cell phone than I wouldn't live without one. I travel for my job and I still have kids in school, plus I have elderly parents.

I remember when my dad first got sick almost 30 years ago. Answering machines were new then and it was wonderful to be able to leave the house and not miss a call. My mom just went on and on about how wonderful it was to be able to reach me and leave a message. When her dad was sick many years before that, you had to stay home or miss the call. Now almost everyone has some type of message device weather its voice mail or an answering machine.

Fast forward 20 years ago, I worked out of town because I had a pager and people could reach me with the pager. There were always phone booths around and every gas station or rest area had one so when I was paged I just called people back.

Now I have a cell phone and I can almost always be reached. I limit who has my number, so I only get calls from people I need to get calls from, but there is no way I could work out of town and travel like I do without it. Last year when my DS and my DFIL were both in the hospital 60 miles apart, the cells phones were a life saver. I could work and still keep tabs on everyone. If it were back in the days before cell phones, I would have been pretty home bound.

These are great points! Having a cell phone can make a huge difference in a life....in fact, it can be a lifesaver, as stories report over and over again from people lost in rubble to people broken down in the road in freezing temperatures.

And I remember the days of having to sit around the house waiting for an important call as well -- either from a doctor, or a job, or a state agency. How quickly some people forget how nervewracking that was!!!!!!!

Annoying people and/or addictive personalities will find ways to be annoying / addictive with whatever is out there.

Cell phone benefits FAR outweigh the costs.

How true. I have one now as I own a business and usually have guys working when I am not but for years did not have one. The phone I have is very simple but has unlimited and long distance. Of course my wife and daughter have to have I phones. I have know idea how to text or any of those other thing younger folks do. And guess what? I've been able to earn a very large income without all this stuff. So many folks I see with cell phones don't look like they can afford them driving old cars and such but still have to have a cell phone.
