Why can't put soda in the luggage?

We cruised in July 01. I taped three 12-packs of diet coke together, taped a luggage tag to it and checked it at the curb with the rest of our luggage & it was delivered to our cabin with our other bags.

We also had several bottles of water left over from our week at the parks, and I put these into a duffel bag with the diapers for our 16 month old. These also travelled well.

What didn't travel well were the 4 loose cans I tried to pack in DH's suitcase. One can came open somehow & totally saturated all his underwear & a few other pieces of clothing & had to do a load of laundry. If I ever try that again, they're going into plastic bags before they get packed.

The one thing to remember is that even regular ziplock bags are not leakproof. It's a good idea to either get freezer bags or double bag these things. That way if something does open - you'll be pretty safe as well as all your fellow travelers. They do really pile the bags on top of each other - we found that out with one of our bags that had it's zipper totally turned around by the time we got our bag (it was a duffle with those hard wire things that help the bag pop open easier).

Did they bring the wine to dinner with them?

We brought liquor and soda onboard as well, just slapped a luggage tag on it. With that said...that would have to be the height of tackiness to bring your own wine to dinner on a DCL cruise...or ANY cruise for that matter. I'm sure glad they didn't do that !

If you do bring it on a plane in checked luggage I thinkit depends on how long you're flying. I have brought juice from Minnesota to Los Angles in a checked luggage peice and no problems. My dad however was in the Air Force and had a direct civilian flight from MN to Saudia Arabia. Another soldier brought pop in his sea bag which was checked in at MSP. By the time they reached Saudi most of the 934th had frozen pop on their bags. What made it worse was there wasn't apparently much time or many places to do laundry so the unit was pretty mad. I would guess it also has something to do with time of year as winter is obviously colder.

The point however is, if you check it, bag and wrap it in excess for your sake as well as those traveling on the same flights/cruise.

Many thank in advance!

Actually I have to respectfully disagree. DCL's wine inventory is not very good, in fact it's pretty lousy. If you like good wines, you will want to bring your own bottles and simply pay the corkage fee for doing so. This is actually pretty standard in the cruise and restaurant industry.

It is my understanding that DCL does not mind if you bring your own wine to dinner. They charge a corkage fee. I have read many people purchase wine in Key West to bring on board with them. I would assume that if they didn't charge a corkage fee - then they would not like you to bring it with you.

Now that being said - the comment about the soda - why not just call and ask? I don't like coke products very well so that is why I brought my own soda on board. I did not bring it to dinner but if I would have thought about it - I probably would have. I haven't seen anything in writing that you can't. All it takes is a phone call.

Did you ask for the Reserve list or just look at the regular wines? DCL actually does have an extensive wine cellar with over 200 different varieties of wine/champagne onboard. (This figure is directly from one of the behind the scenes tour.)

I saw both lists, and frankly even their "reserve" list will not appeal to a true wine afficianado. I ordered two bottles and was fine, however I have friends who would not have cared for DCL's selections.

Oh...

I guess I'm easy when it comes to wine!

(BD, stay away from this!)

We carry on a small rolling suitcase. In that suitcase we put Mtn Dew (gotta have it), bottles of water, and some kind of alcohol. We have never found it to be a hassle to do that. We also put in some snacks as well. We will be doing it again for this Sunday's cruise!
I wouldn't want to chance packing it in our suitcase. But that is my preference.

For medical reason I told my own sodas on the Wonder and had no problems at all. Actaully used a soft sided rolling cooler but no ice. Only drinks avaialble for me on the cruise were water, iced tea and coffee so a soda mug would not have helped in my case.
