Why can't people obey the speed limit?

I'm well aware of the sitatution. I actually go about 15mph in our 25mph neighborhood because of the number of cars parked along the street and the number of kids whose idiot parents let them play in the street knowing how little we can see given all the parked cars.

One part I have to crawl due to a blind corner and dumb tweesn with those dumb motor scooters or they skateboards--doing tricks into the blind corner. they're parents must be so proud.

I don't know why people can't obey the speed limits - other than they might possibly think that laws apply only to other people.. :confused3

Whatever the speed limit is, that's what I drive.. And why do I do that? Two reasons: #1 - It's the law - and #2 - I'm assuming there's a reason for it..

C.Ann, please stop making sense! :rotfl2: :teeth:

If you don't understand there are laws and then "unwritten rules" in our society, then I can't help you. It's common knowledge that driving 5 -7MPH over the speed limit is acceptable in our society. Yes, there are plenty of other laws I choose to ignore, I'm sure, if I thought about it.

If a law was passed requiring me to wake up at 5:00AM, I'm sure I would break it every day. While this sounds foolish, many states still have archaic laws o nthe books that would shock you. And you probably break one of them without even knowing it.

Either I'm a menace to society, or you're one of the few people left in 2006 who believe going 5MPH over the speed limit is criminal in nature.

If it was an important law, you would be arrested. You aren't, so it's not. ;) Unlike sin, there are varying degrees "lawlessness". I have been told that tickets are an education and that they are a revenue source. :teeth:

I believe that going 5MPH over the speed limit is breaking the law - and if you can't understand that, then I can't help you..

Incidentally, two years ago my DH's neice got a ticket for going 63 in a 60MPH zone, so I guess there are troopers out there who also feel that laws are not made to be broken.. She tried to explain to the judge that she was "barely" going over the speed limit and he didn't buy it.. She still had to pay the ticket and all of those lovely "extra" fees that they attach to them.. ;)

5 is--4 and under is not...that's why we have speed ticket signs in some neighborhoods telling you the ticket prices beginning at the 4 over mark (so 39mph in a 35 as an example). 5 and up is ticketable--as it should be. keeping a constant speed without cruise control is a bit tricky at times.

And the little speed detectors to alert you of how fast you are going--they don't flash until then either.

So those are are justifying their 10 to 20 to 30 miles over speedracer lifestyle...aren't winning battles with the "what's acceptable with society" argument.

That's interesting because here in NY whatever is posted is the speed limit - anything over (including the 3 my DH's neice was going) is considered "speeding" and warrants a ticket (or at least it did when she got it).. You're in Florida, right? I still remember riding on the Florida Tpke. with my sister (who is NOT a good - nor a safe driver) and I was scared to death! That's why I'm planning on driving down in my OWN vehicle next year!! LOL :teeth:

I don't know--but these are some streets where speeding is an issue and the fines do not begin until 4 miles over.

Speeding is speeding of course--but a subtle mph variation when the foot cannot maintain a perfectly steady consistent speed (i.e.--prefectly 35...not 36, not 34, not even 35.001).

School zones are totally different---cruise control necessary b/c they will bust you. I actually go only 10 b/c I cannot be consistent with the gas pedal well enough to make it stick at 15 and my cc won't work at that low of speed.

Lisa made me think, the three places that I never speed are school zones, construction zones and beachside. The beachside cities LOVE the revenue they receive from tickets. :teeth:

Battle? :rolleyes1

Who said anything about 20 or 30 miles over? Over 20 is reckless driving, not something you'll find me doing often.

I can think of one little town up north that would virtually have to shut down were it not for the speeding tickets they write.. You would be amazed how many towns count on that revenue because they know there are always going to be those who choose to ignore the law - not realizing that certain areas are more vigilent about it than others.. ;)

We had one doing 18mph over...and one who claims they will go as fast as they choose----and I said 10 to 20 to 30....b/c some feel 30 over is safe b/c they can control their car or their motorcycle. And while not here--it was a generalization tossed out there..you know--since 99% of us break the law every day and all.

We had a cyclist doing up to 100 mph hour--they do it for speed and thrill and think they can control their "vehicle". He was tracked via helicopter as chasing him would obviously be dangerous--he came over the bridge to the beach side and was caught as he was not God and really couldn't control his missile and of course took a nasty nasty spill.

Anyone who thinks they can go as fast as they choose--are probably doing mroe 'wreckless drivign" than anything--and no matter how "safe" they preceive they are--they are a danger to everyone on the road including themselves be it 10 miles or 50 miles over the limit (and at lower speeds---obviously the 10mph would be more noticeable than at hire speeds...and could be wreckless)

Miss J--don't forget over the Eau Gallie Causeway on mainland--another revenue zone when you turn right at the first light.

I'm going to start by admitting that I haven't read every single post, just the first few pages. BUT - I have a great idea for an invention. PORTABLE SPEED BUMPS!!! We could just make them out of a rubber or flexible plastic, make them short and high so they would really cause a car to "jump" when they hit them. You know, the kind of speed bump that makes it sound like you've dropped your tranny when you hit it too fast? Put a couple of them over the road about 20-30 feet apart or one at each end of the block when your kids are out playing, roll them up and put them away when the kids come inside. Anyone want to take this project on? I've been thinking about it for years but never got around to doing anything with it. What do you guys think? :yay:

I must add that I am tired of the dummy they keep placing on one of the causeways. I was rear ended hit and run on that causeway and while the dummy wasn't there--I would have been mad if it were and the dumb car didnt' start going after the jerk who hit me.

The dummy used to annoy me for beign there--now it annoys me b/c i wish it were a real cop.

Talking about beachside loving the revenue, I agree with that.

Going to the beach back home in AL, we would get off I-10 and go south on Hwy. 59 until it deads into Gulf Shores. No kidding there are sections like Loxley and Robertsdale that the speed instantly changes 60mph to 30mph for a 4 lane highway. And let me tell ya, they will ticket ya. Those small cities have more cops than major cities it seems. But people will obey the speed in those sections.

I think that is an excellent idea. Should I see you on American Inventor soon?

And since you admitted you would go 5MPH the speed limit, then I guess you can't help yourself right?

Too bad none of that came from me.

Yes, it didn't come from me either. They keep changing the debate. First, there's rants about 1 MPH over the limit equated to criminal activity, then later there's talk of 30 over.

We all speed, some go +5MPH, I tend to go +10MPH whether the speed limit is 25 or 70.

All I know is when overzealous soccer moms stop, try to patrol the neighborhood, and generally act like fools it just makes me driver faster.
