Why are flags still flying half mast?

Is there a certain time period that everyone flies the flag half mast after a president's death? If so, how long is it? It has been over two weeks since Reagan's death.

I am orginally from Canada, my kids asked me today and I didn't have an answer for them.

President Bush made a decree that the flags would fly half-mast for a whole month in honor of President Reagan.

My dh is a federal DOE employee and I found this in one of his manuals:

"According to federal law, US flags are to be flown at half-staff for a period of 30 days after the death of a current or former US President."

I believe flags will be half-staff until July 5 for President Reagan.

I thought that the flags were going to be at half staffed for a week after they made the announcement for the flags to start being half staffed.

here's another tidbit about flag etiquette.....

if you have a flag that cannot be lowered to half-mast, i.e a flag that is hanging in a window or on one of those poles that you put in front of your house (like mine), you can do this...........

for a house set, tie a black ribbon around the top of the pole.

for a window or wall display, place three black ribbons, one at each top corner and the third in the middle.

Also remember, that if you hang a flag sideways, with the stripes vertical, the stars are to still be in the upper left.
